Cheeky Fly Fishing Co. is trying to inject a dose of cool into our sport

wow, a bunch of ya'll really make yourselves to be a bunch of spiteful **jerks**[mod. edit] by your postings here...what's with all the hate?

4 young fellas are trying to make a go of it in the fly fishing tackle biz, and guess what? have any of you actually tried to start your own business? do any of you know what's involved?

I doubt I'll buy one of their reels, the aesthetics don't appeal to me, but good luck to 'em. It's a tough time to be starting any kind of biz out there, especially in the flyfishing market...

I agree if the reel appeals to you, then value is in the eyes of the beholder, and the same is true if it doesn't appeal to you; I also agree that this "trendy" trend in a segment of the flyfishing community makes me gag a little; also, I agree that there is no need to get so personal against these young entrepreneurs; but, I disagree that wetnet needs to refrain from participating in the site because she has a different viewpoint than others do.

Fly Fishing Should not be "cheeky." Now off I am to brush my tweed trilby.

Four young fellas are trying to start a business capitalizing on the most annoying aspect of fly fishing by purposely creating woefully overpriced garbage in novelty colours and then cashing in on the stupidity of people to buy them.

An attempt to smear a pastiche of MTV superficiality overtop of the whole thing, because fly fishing is to become a hip, urban sport that needs a touch of the extreme.

Yes, yes I have a problem with that.

Evidently, a Powerpoint presentation.

I believe reaction is based off a couple of things.
One, their premise starts off with a VERY small attack, we're stuffy. The other is that this is not really a pull yourself up by your bootstraps situation. These kids have to have some kind serious help, well to do background to do this. I saw them at the somerset show and they had nothing but a reel in a display case, yet they could afford a large booth to peddle their branded bright shirts. A brand for brands sake.

They are not a couple of engineers building a reel themselves and slowing building a business, they're coming at it from a pure marketing perspective.

I would think it would have gotten a better reaction if they had been a bunch of dudes who said "let's make some reels and have some fun", and ditched the Powerpoint.-lol

WTF?

I'm surprised by most of the reactions here: you all sound like me! These guys have acknowledged that they are going to try to appeal to a specific group of fly-fishermen who might likely buy these reels; they are not trying to appeal to us lower middle class flyrodders. I, obviously, will not buy one of the reels, but some wealthy urbanites might very well. Anyhow, interesting reactions.

Ennis Montana-its a trout fishing haven/heaven.

A brand for brands sake.

Yeah, I think that is what bothers most us here. The product is secondary to the brand. Granted, that is the way it is with a lot of companies after their brand becomes popular, but these guys seem to want to skip right to that part. I find that strangely offensive.

speak for yourself. I'm upper middle class just living a lower middle class lifestyle.

I had ignored this thread, but it kept popping to the top so I decided to check it out. Pretty funny.

I still say "the movie" caused all this although indirectly this time. 😛

I would say almost like you. Rich, your passion for the sport and the tradition is admirable and always has been. It's just that one topic that gets in the way alot. I suppose that what some of us are expressing is a desire to see others attracted to the sport in a more traditional way because the tradition has been all about enjoying nature responsibly. Anglers with fancy reels could be very respectful of the resource and other anglers around them, but the sense some of us get, rightly or wrongly, is that folks who would be attracted to decorations of this nature are not likely to be thinking about the resource. It is a stereotype and unfair to the responsible fly angler who likes to add a touch of pizzaz to his or her wardrobe.

Hmmm. I never looked at it that way. I just figured anyone who would buy something like that would fit into the stereotype of an idiot. It's a big shoebox.

I know, I'll design a spinner reel! You know like spinner hub caps!

Hey, I thought of it first!

Jack,
A sensible response to what I wrote. But, I've got to say that it really does sound (almost) like me. (-- And, I've been trying to stay away from that one topic. I really got lambasted by the F-idiot and others the last time I ventured into that territory, and I certainly don't want to take up golf!)

Well, it is never a surprise to me that on one topic I will vehemently disagree with someone and on another topic, think just like them. You should see the looks on the faces of conservatives in the rare instances that I am in agreement with them 😎

I'd buy one if I had some extra cash. I like pretty stuff, what color backing do you think would look best on a blue and yellow reel?

gFEN,
So basically, the simple jist of it is:
HEY YOU KIDS, GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

Revolution and flipping the man off is not the product of too much money and time, but generally the exact opposite.

The pretty boys at Cheeky aren't anything revolutionary, but are scencesters. trying hard to create their own counterculture in a place where it already existed, and doing it wholly wrong. Expecting that money is the answer to a question that no one asked.

You want some actual people of interest and distinction in fly fishing? There's plenty of that. This very board features a man who fishes in a three piece suit after riding his motorcycle to the stream, one who churns out hardcore rifts by night and salmon flies by (err) other nights, and a guy who makes bombs while listening to audio books in his Acura Legend on dubs.

These guys are the sorts of characters that idiots who seek out this Cheeky bull are despertly trying to cash in on. Quirky personalities who do things because they don't give a flying eff what the hell the market has to say, who probably couldn't design a powerpoint pres with the Video Professor breathing down their neck, and generally can't be assed to care about pastel reels with cute names like METHRAGER 850XLT coz they're too busy actually, y'know, fishing.

So, you can take all the manufactured counterculture hipsterism bull that's being pumped down my throat by the collective phallus of marketing and jam it up someone else's tail.

Gary - you are my hero 🙂 Well said.

so G, I guess you actually know and have a somewhat personal relationship w/ the Cheeky fellas? I mean, you've made such a ****sure conclusion about their backgrounds and collective fishing experiences and lifestyles, that ya'll must be buddies or something.....

Or are you just making broad assumptions based upon a fluff piece that's typical of all startups trying to make a splash and get noticed in a pretty crowded market?

It baffles me to read over and over about how 'our sport' is shrinking in numbers, oh woh is me, and then when a company comes along that may actually expand exposure and bring in fresh blood by tapping into a niche market, that ya'll jump on 'em because they're 'doing it wrong' and could possibly attract the wrong type of people, hence bringing ruin to your sport, or something.....I don't get it.

Someday I can only hope to be as core as you, bro.

I kinda like the new wave of cool into fly fishing ....... It sure beats hell out of 45 to 80 year old gray breads
