Went to my local lake looking for crappie, but apparently the Bluegills are already bedding or staging. In any case they were in tight and hitting non stop late afternoon. Shifted away from the shallow muddy areas to give them a break but continued catching steadily; solid fish for this lake mostly around 8". Got bored after and hour or so and called it a day. Was going to mow the yard but sadly a shower blew in. Such a shame....NOT!

Small lake?
Fly fishing? If so what was you tossing? Blue gills are my thing. But I usually only chase them with spinning gear.

80 acre public lake. Your missing out then, they aren't choosy this time of year and way more fun on a fly rod. Bully Spider is my current fav, but Wooley Buggers and countless others will work now.

I like a foam spider. if they're being difficult I'll drop a used beadhead pupa or hares ear under an indicator. But I like the topwater. Foam spiders are very durable. Great for when you're catching them hand over fist.

I should have stated that those were my favorite sub surface flies. Top water is more fun, but often the wind negates that; at least where I live. I like a medium size popper with rubber legs with a black ant dropper for topwater. I don't recommend trout size ants however. 3x long curved no.12 is my go to. Barbless because they will still get swallowed sometimes.

I did same and usually used a beadhead did hackle 10 or 12. And if I waned a softer sink I omitted the bead.
I do need to try some smaller damsel patterns with eyes.
I have also used my 1/64 oz custom tied jigs used on my spinning gear for the fly rod too.

Just use poppers, save your dry flies, the gills will only tear them up. Here's one from yesterday
