Best mop fly material?

I like the galaxy mop material. You can cut it to length and it has flash built in. For hooks 10 and larger I like a slightly longer tail than the car wash mitts give

Definitely car wash mit. I don’t think I could buy any fly shop version of a mop. I like the quirkiness of it being a household material. I use mops as a “when all else fails” fly. That being said, most of my rods hanging up in my garage have a mop fly tied on 😆

If it doesn’t come from a mop it’s not a mop fly. Buy one each in chartreuse, cream and yellow and your set for the rest of your life.

My fishing buddy and I have tried regular mop material and mop fly material but have found Hareline Galaxy mop chenille works the best. We use chartreuse. I know Feathercraft out of the St. Louis area has it. My favored size is on a size 12 jig hook with a black tungsten bead and an Ice Dub peacock black collar.

I'm a car wash mitt guy. I've tried all the brands and colors and are down to two colors: green/chartreuse and tan/cream. I got a tan mitt years ago that I still use (one mitt makes lots of flies). I few years ago the cream RainX car mitt mops were all the rage so I got one. Not sure if cream or tan is better. Both look like crane fly larvae to me so I can feel like I'm matching a real bug. I usually start with a tan mop which I think looks more natural (especially in clear water), but some days chartreuse is what they want. Mop chenilles are OK but I got a lifetime supply of tan and chartreuse ones from a mitt so I am done experimenting.

I do much like the above with a size 10 jig hook with usually a 3 mm black bead. They seem to work just with the mop, but the Ice dub collar (bronze peacock, peacock, black all seem OK) makes it look better to me to fill the space behind the bead. Tried tying on hackle collars and putting an egg up front like the Mop and Glow fly. However, they didn't work for me any better than simpler flies, so I only do simple ones now.

I have a bath mat I bought on Clearance at Aldi that was three tones of mottled brown with lighter and darker speckles and it is fantastic. I think bars and gradient colors look more natural. But I also tie chartreuse car wash mitt flies. I have gray, three shades of creme, pink, orange, and chartreuse. All are stocker killers. The more natural hues are my typical point fly while exploring with nymphs.
