I've mentioned before that I haven't tied flies in 12 or 15 years. I spent last hunting season gathering materials from game I got. I shaved squirrels I shot, plus a roadkill black squirrel, and I saved pheasant feathers. I saved a couple hen skins hoping I could use them instead of buying a partridge skin. Partly because I thought it would be fun to use materials I got on my own and partly because my wife says I'm cheap. I finally looked through some old stuff the other day and found a new unused Hungarian partridge skin. I'm still keeping my hen pheasant skins though.

It always makes me smile when I look through some old stuff and find stuff that I remembered having but forgot where it went!

Dear fatoldman,

If you store your material where it is dry and bug free the stuff lasts forever. I have muskrat fur and squirrel tails I bought in the late 1970's that I still haven't used up. A zip lock sandwich bag of muskrat fur ties a crap ton of flies! I still have more than half the bag left and I tied a ton of muskrat nymphs, scuds, and Casual Dress nymphs along with some Adam's dries when they were about the only flies I ever used during my years at PSU.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂
