At my trout organizations meeting last night we had a speaker come in and give an explanation of some of the positive steps to start cleaning up some Acid Mine Drainage in Portage, in Cambria County.
We are a member of SCRIPT and try to help out in environmental issues as best we can.
I learned that beginning in June a Wetland cleanup system will be put in on Trout run, a stream that dumps into the little Conemaugh. This cleaning system will now provide 2 miles of clean stream. This water has excellent for wild trout in its upper reaches and is stock by my club in the town of Martindale. We will most likely stock this when the stream is clean. I was told that it will not take a long time for the stream to become clean again. The water that will be treated has a pH of 2.9 when it comes out so pretty much orange juice. LOL
I also learned that a coal mining company has agreed to treat the Hughes Borehole in order to mine at a new location. I was told this decision was made with our state representative. The Hughes wipes out a lot of the Little Conemaugh. This has no set date but I am looking forward to these clean ups.
It is good to see positive steps in environmental protection in my area.
