Does anyone have links to some different articles talking about the proposed warehouse near Big Spring? I have to make and then present a presentation of a current event or issue for my environmental systems class and figured this would be a decent topic. Also if anyone knows anything more about it than what is easily found online that would also be greatly appreciated. I think this has been talked about recently on here so I’ll start by looking for that thread and going from there.

Did you have any luck looking online? I have seen a few news pieces from some local outlets, but not a lot of details.

I think I found enough to do the presentation but it was hard to find anything that was more specific than all the other articles/videos. It should be enough though, I have to fill up 10 minutes of time so if I expand on the issue and tie in something about some of the other streams in the area facing similar issues then that’s do-able.

I am an environmental scientist and I live along Big Spring and fish it regularly. I am working with a recently organized group "Coalition to Save Big Spring" that is actively working to prevent the construction of the warehouse in the watershed of Big Spring creek. You can find information on the effort by searching Facebook. In response to a public hearing a month ago a rally was held on Big Spring Creek that was well attended by concerned citizens. There has been follow up media attention as well as some legal activity by some local residents. Besides the growing concerns about increasing truck traffic and the environmental problems associated with warehouse run off, we are particularly concerned that this proposed site is on fragile karst geology so management of contaminated run off will be difficult, further warehouse construction will involve blasting which will have unpredictable impacts on water movement in the watershed. At the public DEP hearing several independent Geologists expressed concern at both the construction of a warehouse in karst geology and at the inadequate site analysis that had been conducted to move this project to this stage of approval. If you or anyone else that wants to protect this remarkable resource wants to express your concern you can text Governor Shapiro at 717-788-8990. I have some photos of the rally I am happy to share for your presentation and can discuss by PM if you want to discuss further.

Thanks a lot for the info and the pictures , it’s good to hear that a lot of people are concerned about protecting the stream. I wasn’t around to see any of the famous limestoners in their prime, but I’ve noticed recent declines on a couple of streams even during the short time I’ve spent fly fishing in the Cumberland Valley and it’s depressing. Big Spring is one of the only limestoners (on public land) that, at least in my opinion, is worth a visit for the fishing experience and not just the history. I’d hate to see the situation turn into something similar to the way it is on Falling Spring these days.

I’ll check out the Facebook page and look into that DEP hearing. If I still have questions after that I’ll shoot you a pm, thanks again for reaching out.
