What Are You Tying Today?

Breathilizer-1080.jpg

Breathalizer

Hook - Down-eyed 6-10 long shank
Thread - Black
Tail - Soft black hackle fibres
Body - Flat silver tinsel
Rib (optional) - Fine silver wire
Wing - Two hot-orange hackles back-to-back with two Green Highlander hackles on the outside
Cheek - Jungle Fowl
Hackle - Collar badger hackle (white or cream with a black centre)

This pattern was created in the late 1960s by Alec Iles for fishing Chew Valley. It is especially for those times when the trout feed on fry. He adapted some North American patterns to produce this streamer. The pattern first appeared in John Veniard’s book Lake and Reservoir Flies, 1970.

Goldie

Hook - Down-eyed 6-12 long shank
Thread - Black
Tail - Yellow hackle fibres
Body - Flat gold tinsel
Rib - Fine gold wire
Hackle - Yellow hackle
Wing - Yellow goat hair or dyed squirrel, with black hair over

This lure, credited to Bob Church, was devised in the late 1970s for reservoir fishing. It is normally fished deep, but I have taken fish with it at all depths. It is a good lure for cloudy, muddy water.

Ombudsman

Hook - Down-eyed 8-10 long shank
Thread - Brown
Body - Peacock herl
Rib - Copper wire
Wing - Mottled brown hen or Turkey
Hackle - A long soft, brown hackle
Head - Brown. The head of the fly is tied in an elongated fashion.

This fly was created by Brian Clarke and given in his excellent book, The Pursuit of Stillwater Trout. It imitates a number of large aquatic nymphs, including the Alder larva. I have heard this fly described as the nymph fisherman’s lure, especially when tied as a hair wing.

That's a beautiful, very clean fly. Isn't that basically a Leadwing Coachman? I'm reading Ed Van Putt's new book and he mentions that aside from the Royal Coachman, the Leadwing version caught more trout for him than any other wet fly. I'm not a wet fly angler myself, but I like the idea of it....

foam was no bueno. it tore around the bend as i feared it might and it could have been the shape, but it twisted the heck out of the leader. the ones i cut from the thin leather seemed fine.

also, the ones i tied on 9672's (middle one) had a hook gap issue which i also thought might be a problem. too many fish came unbuttoned so i retied them on some vintage mustad 3891's. a stout ring eyed sproat hook in size #1.
i also put some yellow fabric marker on the claws and added more weight with one have a single wrap and the other a double of .033 lead wire under the chenille.

Great looking flies. They will catch! Check out the MC Fluke fly if you are into smallie fishing. It actually has more action than soft plastics.

the first ones were tied with cut down Chuck Kraft Baitfish Tails which seemed a touch short. i bought a sheet of glitter felt at Michael's and used it for the fluke material. Mossy Creek's flukes are 3 1/2" and that's the length of the ones i cut from the sheet. it's not quite the same material, but i think it will work fine.

Looks like a souped up Shenk’s White Minnow. The Smallies should be all over that!
