might be a good tool for those bushwacker brookie busters out there.

(If you don't know woot, they sell one product a day until it sells out, then they put something else up... so this is a limited offer)

ryguyfi,
I check out the woots, but I've never bought anything. I've tried a few times, but they were always sold out before they got to my order. I always check the deals online to see if it really is a deal.

I found this thread at 11 PM and was so close to splurging and buying that.

I saw the woot, but decided not to bite. Didn't even look at the reviews but from some of the chatter on the woot forum I decided to pass. Here is some of my thought processes from looking...

It looked like it was a recharghable battery.
If it's a pack can it be replaced with regular AA's when it dies and your're still lost?

The downloadable maps are only very small quadrants, and only 4 are free...

XM radio... hmmm... battery killer! If i want tunes on the water I'll take an ipod.

Weather reports. Ok, now we're talking... this is handy

Electronic compass, is a big plus. You can stand in one place and recalculates North as you spin (like a real compass). You dont realize how nice this is until you have a unit that requires you to walk about 10 feet before it "sees" you are moving and recalculates north for you... ie no sitting in one spot and finding where north is.

I tend to look at weather reports and topo maps of the area i'm going into before I go, but things are constantly changing, so the last two points might be useful. If it were me, I'd pass... (besides I have an old garmin that gets the job done from 2001!)

My one buddy bought a 65" TV on woot... best part... $5 shipping!

I like to buy the bags of crap during woot offs. You can get super lucky.

I was at Best Buy today right beside Trindle Spring. The Garmin Nuvi 205W is going for $109 and they have a crap load of them

This was a hand held GPS with breadcrumbs and a lot of other options to help the hunter, or bushwacking brookie fisherman.

Walmart had a tomtom for $69 on black friday. They're rediculously cheap now.

Speaking of good deal sites, check out steepandcheap.com. It is Backcountry.com's inventory clearing house, and is similar to woot - you have one item at a ridiculous price, and when it's gone they immediately move on to the next item.

They frequently have Maui Jims, Native, Smith's, and other high end sunglasses for sub-$50. And they carry the Cloudveil Crystal Creek waders that show up every once in a while for about $129. They frequently have hand-held GPS units for cheap.

Download the desktop alarm and you'll never miss a good deal.
