The upcoming PFBC meeting will consider proposed additions from AFM's regarding the subject lists. The proposals (2) are based on recent stream surveys, most of which were conducted last field season. By my quick count there are 82 new streams or extensions/contractions to existing waters on the Wild Trout List (Streams that support reproduction of trout) included in the proposal. The two "NOTICES" may be seen at http://fishandboat.com/reg398.htm The 82 streams are ones that made the "cut." Numerous additional streams were surveyed that were found to not support trout reproduction in the process of generating the new waters for the list. Some are in portions of counties where laymen and even some professionals would not necessarily expect to find wild trout. This, to me, is another reason why the list is interesting.

Thanks for the info, Mike. Great to see additions to the list. I agree, some real interesting ones in there.

Here is are links to the additions Mike told us about:

One other thing, Mike. The data on the FBC "trout reproduction" stream map from Google is not coming up, and hasn't for quite a while. Is there an IT person at the PFBC that needs to be informed about the glitch?

Thanks again for the heads up. Good fishing.

Cool.

Is there any info available on how many streams were surveyed? Or what areas where the focus of the surveys? I am curious as to how many streams were needed to be surveyed to find 82 that contained wild trout.

Thanks,

Kev

I have no idea. I surveyed twenty or more in SE Pa. There is no list of waters that did not make the cut. It would have to be generated manually, which would be very low priority in the grand scheme of things. The fisheries management staff is small and to add to that there has been only one permanent person (me) in SE Pa since last July and only one in part of NW Pa for much longer. Hiring is or will be underway in those offices soon.

Thank You Mike 🙂

I think the DeLorme atlases (4th, 9th, and 10th editions) all have White Bear Creek incorrectly labeled. They have that name shown for a stream that flows west into a reservoir, then exiting as Owl Creek.

But according to the PFBC info, White Bear Creek must be the stream that flows east into Mauch Chunk Lake, then exiting as Mauch Chunk Creek, flowing east and into the Lehigh River at Jim Thorpe.

As they taught us in cartography class:
"The map is not the landscape."

I'm just waiting for Beaver County to his that list one of these days. It's a pipe dream, but a dream none the less.

All these streams should be labled as class A and catch and release only. To many knuckledhead's will still keep fish from these streams.

If you know of any in Beaver County, call the PFBC and let them know.

Funny that this map, as well as the Marcellus one in the conservation thread, seemed to be down during the same time period. Seems like it was google having issues?

Google may have changed APIs, and broke reverse-compatibility.

Phelps, Kingsley (Forest County)

Hogback Run (Clearfield County)

The changes in limits on the Little Manatawny and Furnace Creek in Berks.

I suppose thats technically 5, but I lumped the last 2 together. You guys had that area way off base. It's fixed, well, in the process of it. Thought about bringing that up, but never got around to it...

On another note, here in Berks County, can we please stop naming streams Furnace Creek? I know of at least 3 with wild trout, though one's closed to fishing.

fwiw, I have fished three of the streams that are to be added to the class A list and shall remain "nameless." 🙂

Stream names are not of the PFBC's doing. AFM's are asked to comment on proposed name changes submitted by others (municipalities, private individuals, groups) to USGS. Even in the rare instances where we have objected, the objections have usually been rejected in the final naming process. That is why there are now two streams with the same basic official name within about three miles of each other west on I-78 from Hamburg. So, I would not surprise me if the number of Furnace Runs and Creeks in Berks would continue to grow over time, especially if they are little more than a few miles apart.

The naming thing was meant to be a joke, sorry if you took it as an honest request or insult of any sort. I know the PFBC is not responsible for naming streams.

But seriously, if I run across another Furnace Creek, Spring Creek, Pine Creek, or Mill Creek, I'm gonna cry. Can't seem to keep them all straight... 🙂

I live 2 miles away from Hogback run. Never fished it I drive 40 min to native fish. I new it was there but never stopped.l
