Here is an article discussing the vulnerability of Steelhead (or substitute any trout species) and common catch-and-release practices.

From my personal experiences of discovering deceased trout...many have had head injuries.

As usual researches contradict each other on catch and release methods. I say always use a net, and certainly don't beach any fish you intend to release. We recently saw an article saying the opposite, I thought at the time it was crap, and still do.
Of course in PA it doesn't apply to Steelhead, because they are all stocked and will make more.
