Tricos on spring creek

Might be in state college this weekend and thought I would give the trico fishing a try. Water permitting. Never fished the tricos before. Any advice as far as what part of spring creek to fish? Are some sections better then others?

Thanks

I fished the Benner section a few weeks ago. The tricos were strong between 6 - 8. I did well on a size 24 male spinner, but things may have changed since then.

Good luck!

There are tricos everywhere, but I've always found the biggest concentrations between Paradise and Bellefonte. That was years ago, though, and things change.

Get there early. While they sometimes fall as late as noon on cooler, dreary days, 8-9 is most common. And on hot, clear days, 7 a.m. isn't unheard of. When I used to chase them, arriving at daybreak was standard. Can fish the end of the duns a bit, then search out clouds of bugs and set yourself up.

Yes the section with the most fish and heaviest trico hatches.

Are some sections better then others?

Yes

Hope that answers your questions.

Adding info, comments, or opinions is welcome on here. Junking up a thread with snarky bs is not welcome, and is a waste of everyone's time. Post something with content or don't post at all.

They have seemed to be very spotty there lately. But I would agree with prays recommendation.
If you don't see tricos - try terrestrials

/\ This.

Thanks to my dogs I was finding them right near the bank. Some so close their dorsals were out of the water. The bastard about this was if I could land the beetle between them and the bank, it was almost a sure take. But with as close as they were, it was one small target.

I hate bank fish. You almost have to cast across currents, and the water near the bank is slow. Fly sits there with hardly any drift, for as long as you can manage the drag, then just takes off. Frustrating.

But if that's where they are, that's where you gotta fish. There are situations where you can cast from the same bank.

Thanks Afish for a very fitting response coming from a Mod. I thought about responding myself but I didn't want to turn it into a big pissing match.

Two general questions were asked and two legit general answers were provided. Shoot me for not responding in accordance with PAFF mods requirements of specifying the exact GPS coordinates of the best holes.

If the guy would have done a little research and asked, "Between this section or that section, what do you think is the better section to try," that is different.

The best advice I ever got was when I was 10 years old and I kept running into this old gent who was always telling me about the big fish he was catching and I kept asking, "Where are they," and his response was, "Son, the fish are where you find them."

I didn't get it at first and was actually 46547654 and thought the guy was an 78876 until he explained, "Kid, if you don't learn to figure things out on your own you're never going to learn how to fish and become a good fisherman but if you can learn where the fish ared and how to fish for them, you'll be able to go to any stream and catch lots of fish."

And I learned how to find fish and fish for them. That is my philosophy.

And BTW, in the Green Weenie fly thread (about the fly) I made a passing comment about a color theory based on a lot of stream experimenting and I didn't see any of you mods sending a PM like others did asking what I meant and could I explain (obviously you know the theory then). And those who sent a PM got a detailed reply probably much to your surprise. But don't bother asking about it now because the door has shut on that one.

I don't volunteer information but if you ask and show genuine interest in learning and just don't want to be spoon fed where do I fish you actually get a reply.

Sorry if this is another piece of stupid information with no content.

I stated that I didn't intend to turn this into a big pissing match and I won't let it so this will be my last reply on this thread. I simply think Afish's comments were spot on considering your tone. When you type something it is different than saying it to someone's face, that can be a big problem with social media sites. This can be a big issue for someone new to the site that clearly stated that they had never fished Tricos before.

When I read the post I see a genuinely interested person wanting to fish spring creek(probably for the first time). He might not have done a search in the archives, or maybe he did. Either way he asked a question wanting a little more than a yes/no.

I am sure GW gets a lot of cheerful PMs about how he sticks it to the man, but by-and-large, most poster/readers see him for what he is: a disgruntled participant who can't stay away or let go of issues that others disagree with him on. Clearly just about everyone has had enough; that is, every person who desires to see positive contributions to our community.

Hey Jack, see the positive contributions to the steam report that was posted and subsequently moved. There was enough info posted to figure out the stream if you weren't too lazy.

So what contributions do you make?????

Not much.

If anyone reads the post they will get some good info on fishing for tricos and also for a possible pertty damn good stream.

If they want to work at it.

Plainly stated, you do not want to conform to the reasonable standards set. This is obvious to all but the oblivious. And, rather than to "move along," you use the freedom granted you to grind axes. Stream Reports require identification of the stream. You knew that and did it anyway and then grandstanded your scofflaw attitude. Your snarking here was unnecessary and un-called for. To me it is unwelcome. Apparently to others as well. As I said, enjoy the accolades from your fanbase, but don't kid yourself where the balance of opinion falls. If you wish to discuss this privately, please feel free to PM me.

Now, ignoring OT, which is where most of my recent posts are, you will find nearly universally that I post helpful information. Sometimes bad attempts at humor, but rarely if ever do I simply snark and ridicule other posters. And as strongly as I feel about the perrenial controversies here, I am not constantly peppering my posts with pop-shots on the issue. I see that kind of behavior as beneath me and wish you would feel the same.

I'm back from spring creek. Beautiful weather and perfect colored water.
First want to thank everyone that posted helpful info. Not you GW.
I fish spring creek probably 7 to 10 times a year, but have never gone to try and fish the tricos. I didn't want anybody to tell me where to park, where to stand, how to fish. Was mostly wondering if they were more prolific on any part of the stream. I thought this forum was for asking questions, but thanks to GW's pearls of wisdom I now know you can only ask questions if he approves.

Anyways, fished this morning from 7am till noon below Benner springs quite a ways, hoping for some trico action. There were a decent amount of them flying in certain areas, but never really saw any falling to the water. Oh well, did land 11 fish on caddis pupas, cress bugs and a couple on a small ant real tight to the bank.
Thanks.

you were provoked, I understand, but next time I suggest ignoring the comments and the author all together in your update.

PS the tricos behaved the same on the lower end of Spring Creek today- not a true intense fall.

yeah I know. My bad.

Thanks for the info. Almost headed down to Milesburg, but it was so nice decided to do some hiking.

I'd recommend trying that section of Spring if you have not fished it before. It has a very different feel to it compared to the rest of Spring creek.

Back to tricos- Try sinking your trico if you are having trouble getting them to take on the surface. Just pull it under after the fly lands. It works best if the wings are not too heavy.
