Does anyone have an old spool of Stren Gold they'd part with? Not usually in anyones fly fishing collection but some of you spin fisherman might have a spool you can dust off. Not the new braided stuff the older Stren made in the 80's.

How much do you need? I have plenty. It's all i use. I was told by more then one fishermen ..."trout fishermen don't use the gold stren because the fish can see it". Well i've been using it for about twenty years and have no problem catching my fair share.

Not much, a spool of a hundred yards would last him for years. What ever you can spare. Our local Gander doesn't have it in stock and the places we have look sell it only the big spools. He uses it to make indicators that he can see. He's flying out to New Mexico the 31st. Send me a PM and I'll tell you where to mail it and we'll figure out a fair compensation. Need anything from New Mexico? Very nice of you to offer.

how does one make indicators from mono the same way you make it from yarn?

flipnfly,

The mono indicators are built into the leader.

In fly fishing competitions, extra "add-on" indicators are not permitted; nor shot.

i gotcha thats like the section close to where the line butts aginst the leader a guy the other day his was red

Yep.
However, it doesn't have to be that far up the leader. My section is about 2 feet from the first fly because most of the water I fish, and prefer to fish is less than 2 feet deep. I do have a section of it higher too for higher/deeper water as well.

wetnet - let me know if the diameter of the Stren isn't what you want. I have plenty left over from the America Cup thang in CO - especially since I never did get to nymphing.

Hit the local Gander today and they do not have any treatment to revive Gore-Tex. Nor did they have the Stren Hi-Vis Gold you guys mentioned. I was curious to check it out.

I did a search on line- is this it?? Not much in the way of lbs. choices.

Thanks

This is the Stren Gold she's looking for. The new stuff isn't as bright as the stuff from way back though - hence the request for older stuff. I'd be leery about using old mono though.....

We'll we have both the old and the new coming thanks to a PaFlyFish friend so he'll be good. So much going on ..three of us going somewhere in the same week. Busy,Busy. I'm going to State College for business and am trying to figure out when I can sneak off and hit the stream.

I might buy it if I can get it in a thicker diameter. The stuff Cabelas has only goes up to .016. I'd like something a little thicker like .018 or 019. 0.16 wouldn't be bad for an indicator fishing shallower water. At least how I build my leaders, 016. is the third or fourth piece on my leader.

You certainly came through and did it with with flying colors. The spool is exactly what was needed. The newer stuff I bought didn't have the good color and the line is in perfect condition. We've got curly Q's all over the house already and probably could fill a room before we'd make a dent in that spool. I saved your address and Wes said he's send you something from New Mexico. I owe you postage so send me a PM. Very Appreciated.

How many curly Q's can you get out of 2,400 yards of line? We'll let you know. Thanks Again!!
:-D
