I was out in my kayak at French Creek State Park last night.
Two thirds of the way out to the dam the water was full of clumps of something dark green. Not chopped up weeds.
I did not grab any to see what the consistency was, but am slightly alarmed as I have never seen this before.
Anyone else run into this anywhere?

My guess would be some sort of algae bloom(?). These are common this time of year and usually just produce greenish water but sometimes you get clumps.

I doubt it's "snot" (this is a colloquial term for didymo in angling language) as we're talking about a lake and didymo outbreaks are more common in tailrace streams in springtime.

Without photos it's hard to say.

But it sounds like "pond scum", i.e. filamentous green algae.

Which is very common on warm, fertile ponds.
