After many years of acid mine drainage a tributary of Shamokin Creek in Shamokin, Carbon Creek has been stocked with 1000 Brook Trout Fingerlings. Article is here:http://newsitem.com/news/1-000-trout-released-into-carbon-run-1.1135573#axzz1K9q9bsMi

I have been looking forward to this for a long time!

I'm orginally form Shamokin (Gowen City) my parents and brother still live there. This is impressive glad to here projects like this are working in our area. I would hope someday we could retore Mahanoy Creek in our Valley.

I think it is exciting! A few years back some kids caught trout on the Fifth Street section of this creek. I really didn't think I would see it in my lifetime.

I have seen some carp in the creek behind Anthracite Provision.

I remember talking to Jeff F about this creek and he telling me how bad shape it was in. It's great to see things are changng for the better.

Good report. 1000 isn't very many, but hopefully they take. Stream may or may not need more time, but nonetheless its a signal that the treatment is helping.

A very minor nit to pick with the editor of the article. Article says it was a mine ACID problem. And then says pH levels were REDUCED by passive treatment systems. I certainly hope the pH levels were raised, not reduced.

NERD!
I saw that too, but didn't want to be called a nerd.

shhhhhhhh and eat your pizza Dave 😛

Its good to hear things like this. I would imagine they may need to stock some more. Maybe another 2 or 3 years to see if the fish really take.

Cross your fingers!

Absolutely.

I love to hear those success stories.

Love pizza too, but you knew that.

"Kaleta said brook trout will not migrate far and should not make their way into Shamokin Creek, where fish aren't able to survive until further down stream."

How much further down? And what kind of fish?
🙂

Troutbert,

I think their is a portion of the creek that might have a tributary that is still pretty nasty, but seems to clear up once it gets closer to Shamokin. Just a guess, it has been a while since I walked out that way it is a pretty good distance if you walk it.

We just need to wish and hope for the best.

gentleshepherd,
I think thats great news. My parents had a house at the end of shamokin st. that they would come to in the summer from fl. I remember walking back to the back yard and seeing nothing but junk in there car tires grocery carts bicycles and ppls garbage bags that lived on that side of the street. We used to live on clay st. and moved to wellsboro in 2002. When was the creek project done? I hope they can keep the people of town from redumping there garbage and whatever else they used that creek for those trout may have a chance. I sure hope they do.

The mine acid projects have been going on for a few years, there have been successes and failures from what I have been told. I have heard rumors of fish being caught out in the Bear Valley patches but all unsubstantiated. I have know for a while that minnows have been seen as far down the creeks as Arch St where the 2 big branches meet to head to the treatment plant.
Since the mile was drained and the waters funneled down through the old mine runs it seems that the creek looks a bit clearer, not sure if that means anything. The Shamokin Creek restoration team really deserves all of the credit for this vision. They usually have a booth at the Anthracite Heritage Festival every Memorial Day weekend, you should come down and visit. Both sides of MArket Street are filled with vendors and there are Wagon & Trolley tours, this year a train ride will be included to Paxinos. Hop eyou can make it.

I Just might head down there G.S. We havent been to shamokinfor a few months. We have friends down there we stay with a day or two when we do visit. I might check out that little stream and see the transformation. I bet its a welcome sight to the area for the people that know what it was like before.

You can say that again! I remember as a kid we used to fantasize about fishing in these creeks, maybe I will see it in my lifetime. Hope your trip down is eventful. DOn't forget to make the customary stop at the Coney!

Do you live in Shamokin, Thr reason I ask is, Do you know Jeff Faban. He was a member here for awhile back, and a good friend. I haven't heard from him in a long time, just wondering what happened to him.
