When I was at Flyfisher's Paradise today stocking up (my wife paid -- made it my Christmas gift), I noticed two nice paintings of fish on the wall -- both by Dave Weaver (Fishidiot). If I could figure out a way to free up a small space on the wall of my fly tying room, I'd beat it back to FFP and have me one of those. Weaver's paintings are nice and would make nice additions to anyone's fly tying room, man cave, or den. I wish I had some talent in that direction! He certainly has a nice touch.

one of the great things about attending the spring jam is watching Dave do a painting while he sits at a picnic table and chats with everyone. One of these days I'll have one on my wall!

Thanks for the kind words rrt.
I've rec'd a great deal of encouragement from Paff readership for my various painting and fly tying projects - better watch out that I don't let my head get too big. 🙂.

Anyway, fly shops like FFP have also played a role in supporting me by providing a space to exhibit artwork. Although I'm not a full time artist or fly tier....I think it's worth remembering the debt that some of us owe to fly shops like FFP: they provide a means for people to exhibit flies, artwork, custom stuff like rod building, or a place to conduct book signings (or whatever). You usually can't get this local touch with big box stores. I once sought to work with a well known big box in south FL (they have a nice fish art gallery) but quickly found out, as I have with other big stores, that they weren't interested in unknown artists peddling small scale merchandise like original paintings. Traditional fly shops like FFP, YBO, Slate Run etc will give a "new guy" or a local fellow in the fly fishing business a chance.
