Anybody see the National Geographic Special this week [its a repeat] about catching 6 foot freshwater trout in Mongolia? It was something to see. Here is the link.

Didn't see the special, but I have been dreaming about Taimen for years.

Thanks for the link.

Crazy stuff..

Seems so far fetched to me though- like New Zealand,Russia and Christmas Island. I have no desire to goto these locales.

But a man can dream...

My dreams are wrapped up in Tarpon much closer to home these days.

ps- I am allowed to change my mind at anytime.

two guys that had the chance to fish the Missouri and catch 8 foot fish
JayLJ would have been a natural-snagging

Though I'd love to catch any 6 ft fish, especially taimen, after watching AEG's "River Wolf" video I have no desire to go through what those guys did. Months of searching to find them and weeks with nothing to show for it. Traversing serious terrain on camels and old Russian military vehicles coupled with yak hair flies and month old body odor does not appeal to me right now.

The ridiculous taimen on the other hand do but it appears I'm not as "hard core" as they.

Poon in the tropics, now we're talkin!

yeah, they spoke about anglers paying thousands a piece for a shot at the fish. Fisherman being flown by helicopters into the first lodge setup there etc...

They said some of that money goes towards the conservation of the fishery, hope it's true.

Looks very cool, probably a very hard DIY trip tho.

I did see it. What struck me was how thin the fish were but with massive heads. Typically that's a sign of water not able to support healthy fish, but I think here it's a sign of the species-- Taimen. That big one he caught at the end of the show had a body that reminded me of a pike.

The other thing that struck me as odd, was that they fished for days without a hit, then wham they were into them... big fish. Was it because they were targeting only big ones with large flies? Or was it reflective of weather changes?

I didn't have the chance. It's on the todo list, you old coot.
