well, here's my first attempt with attaching a bead to the hook and covering with hot glue. I think I got the colors pretty good, just need pratice with using the glue gun. I made some in hook sizes 12, 16, and 18. Any thoughts?

They look great imo. Very translucent and real. Only thing is how well will they hold up to trouts little razor teeth?

Your colors look great! The way the egg is affixed to the hook looks somewhat suspect to me. I think you need more glue on the underside of the shank--that is center the egg more on the shank. The trick is to keep the hook turning to evenly apply the glue around the shank.

I tried tying these and it takes practice but they're not that hard once you get used to them. I used my AA vice but have not attempted them with a rotary, I'd suspect the rotary would come in handy for this pattern.

Here're a tutorial that I recently read on these kinds of eggs. This guy uses a drill to turn the hook and more evenly disperse the glue. You can also put a brass or glass bead on the hook and build your egg around that to create a nuclei. I think a red glass bead would look killer.

I usually hold the hook with forceps and then rotate as you are adding the glue. Also try dropping them into cold or warm water for different effects.

Just a thought, but depending on the bead you're using, just thread it on the hook and surround it with glue from there so it's more durable.

If you have a rotary vise, just spin it.
