This was posted on Gary Borger's Website... I wonder if they get that big in the Delaware?

Too Big for a Fly Rod
Posted on May 11, 2010, 7:38 pm, by Gary Borger, under Misc.

Some fish are just outsized. It might be fun for the first 8 hours; after that it would just be work.

This is a darn interesting picture and story even if you aren’t into fishing,
But please show it to anyone you know that likes to fish.

FYI: This sturgeon is still alive, just worn out from the fight.
As the sports fishermen they are, they turned him loose after the photo.

This Sturgeon was caught in the Missouri River, North of Bismarck, North Dakota two weeks ago.
It weighed out at over 1,000 lbs and measured out at 11′1″.

It was 56″ around the girth and took over 6 and a half hours, and 4 dozen beers, for the 4 guys taking turns at the reeling it in.

Any Sturgeon OVER about five feet has to be released unharmed and cannot be removed from the water.

They are brood / breeding stock and probably older than most of us.

That story is a few years old I believe

imagine if trout in the delaware got that big! there would be alot less anglers taking up space i assure you 🙂

They have them throughout the Snake river system as well and some of the old pics they have are amazing. Today you get most of them in the 4 to 7 foot range at best but I have seen similar pics of 12 and 5 ft Sturgeon being cradled next to their undersized boats. Problem with sturgeon is that even nymph fishermen would find it unappealing as the are bottom feeders of the worst kind.

Wonder what the real mortality rate is for hooked sturgeon, given a 6.5 hour fight for this one? All that lactic acid can't be good for the fish.

When I first glanced a the photo, I thought it might be Chaz with one of his brookies. 😛

Now that I read it, I see it's a sturgeon. Amazing fish.
