I did a interative display at a youth fishing derby. I had the kids identify and measure their fish, I had some caddis, mayfly and stone flies in jars with piture displays and a small gift (Swedish fish and a little shark or stingray) for participating, I was amazed how many kids new the fish they caught right off.

The best part was a little guy who hooked up on a 17 inch rainbow that yelled, "WhoooooEeeeeeee! I got a fish!! Whoop, whoop, whoop. Lookie here! I got a fish and it huge. Whoop, whoopieeee!" He had his fist in the air, shaking it! Made my face hurt he had me smiling so much. Now that is fishing!!

Wetnet..............aint it a hoot? I've been to three so far and everyone has a blast , the adults more than the kids sometimes , don't they just eat it up though. A local sportsmans club has done it several years in a row now and the crowd gets bigger every year , what a cool thing they are.

I love going to the derby we hold. You see kids as small as (2) giving it their best. I love to see the kids who insist they have a bobber in 2 inches of water or they have to use their daddy's best lure only to snag it on a rock. The best action is a 2 foot snoopy rod about to break because of a nice trout. 🙂 The kids love it and we load them with fish. probably stock 500 to 700 for them. Most of the fish are caught and taken in the first week but it is a blast watching the little guys get "hooked" on fishing.

I am lucky our community is so supportive as well. All kids got a free hotdog and soda pop. And everyone left with a door prize from footballs to rods with built in flashy lights.

And thank you for dontating some of your time with your demonstration the other day. Gave me an idea to set on up for our derby next year. The booth set up is not copywrote is it? lol

Great job!!

No and you are welcome to what I used. Some of it is from the PA fish and boat comission website. here's a link. http://fishandboat.com/education/catalog/cat0index.htm

My theme was "About your trout." I had 3 pics from the website. Mayfly, stonefly and caddis. I also made something on publisher with pictures of brook trout, brown trout and rainbows. I could share them as well. They really helped because they were real pictures, especially with the rainbows because of the variations in color. We use a 28" of 4" PVC pipe with an end cap sawed long ways to make 2 units, then glued and clear taped a piece of fabric type measuring tape in the bottom. They work great because the fish slide to the end and hit the cap and don't fall out. I had some cheap magnifying glasses for the insects which someone from A&G outfitters near Scranton let me borrow, I saw lots of snoppy and barbie rods and I have to say the kids that did the best were the ones where Mom and Dad kept there hands to themselves. LOL!! It was a hoot.

i know what your are saying with keeping your hands to yourselves. I can understand with the little knee high to a grass hopper kids but 8 year olds can fish. we had to remind some adults it was a kids fishing derby. But you know how that gos.
