Ok so I know the where to fish page is here and certainly not asking for your honey hole but I would appreciate any help you guys could offer.

ConMan is coming into town on Jan 7th and we're hitting the Pens vs. Flyers game. The current plan for Friday is to roll up to Erie and try to get into some Steelies, but the weather may force us to think twice and head somewhere else. We're looking for suggestions as to where to go that we can find some open (non frozen) water.

Anybody have experience with some of the Central PA streams that they'd care to share in relation to winter fishing? We're traveling from Pittsburgh so I'm thinking Central PA is likely as far as we'd like to travel but certainly would apprecaite other suggestions.

PM me with any info that you'd care not to post.

Thanks in advance.

Jaybo

Jaybo,
Think limestoners for open water and you've got a bunch to consider in central PA. The spring creeks around State College would be a good bet. The Cumberland Valley streams are clear and fishing well but they would be a further drive, around 3.5 hrs from P-burgh.

The Yough is safely above freezing below the dam. Not as warm as a true limestoner, but not bad today at 5 degrees C (41F).

Not only are the limestoners flowing freely, but if there is no snowmelt, the fish will be actively feeding.

everything around me is icy and slushy, the slippery rock, neshannock, cool spring. none are worth getting your boots wet in my opinion.
they've gotten bunches of snow up along erie, bunches more to come.
better skiing weather than fishing right now

streams here are 35 to 37 degrees, to cold to fish. snow todat with a balmy 32 degree temp..been below 20 for the last 5 days.

I have never seen the Little J frozen

The river has way too much class for that (and limestone water)

HAPPY NEW YEAR

erie is a bad idea elk was partially frozen but what moving water was moving was slushy walnut was worse with less moving water same with crooked creek we didnt even bother with the mile creeks and we also tried the lake it was slushy too about 100 feet out way beyond my casting ability with anything but my 10 foot noodle and a metric ton of weight which i didnt have with me

Pretty much agree with the other guys above-

The Yough and the Big 4 in Central PA. I would'nt expect much but you'll probably get into some. Good luck and Go Pens.

Thanks to all who have replied and especially to those who shot me PM's. We've certainly got some options to think about. Now to see how the weather plays out...

Sounds like we'll need a heat wave for Erie, that is certainly not forecast. Maybe OH tribs... ? Otherwise, looks like we'll hit Central PA.

Cheers,
Mike.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I recieved a couple of PM's along with the posts, all info is most appreciated! I've got to give kudos to Jay though, he put together a ton of information for us that, along with the resources I've got will surely prove helpful.

I'll try to get some photos of the trip posted when we return.

Board comraderie at it's finest!

Thanks again Jay!

Wills Creek , Somerset co. was there today trying to catch one on Boss's Folgers fly it's open but it's COLD>got shut out. Black Velvet and chili fixed the cold but my ego is bruised.

I see the river here in the Hbg. area is starting to freeze.

Where is that Indian summer?

I just noticed the other day it was starting to get slushy. It was downright chunky yesterday. We'll have to get together in your neighborhood this spring Paul. I drive right by you every day.
