thinking about getting my fish of a lifetime mounted. Not sure wich color phase i like. I am leaning toward the winter phase. I took many detailed pictures of him. I know it is my preference but i would like your input let me know what you think. I like both color phases. He gave me a better and more memorable fight in the summer but his color in the winter is more what i am after.

Anyone else ever get one done?

I'm going to have to say that I really like the summer colorings. I personally like those bright, vivid colors that he has in the summer.

Oh heck, just get them both done. 🙂

Nice fish! A replica is going to run you $200-$300- I say put your money towards a double picture frame with both pictures and use the rest for fishing gear.

1) Wasn't beauty2.JPG an enhanced photo to begin with? Kind of throws it out of the running imo. Then again, its a fiberglass replica, so who's to say?

2) Dude, it's a nice fish but you are going to catch much better looking fish and likely much bigger fish in your life. You are short in your "lifetime".

Save the money, spend it on an awesome trip and catch another fish of a lifetime imo.

Just lie, give the makers some pictures and ask them to bump it up to 27".

MR,
I'm confused. Are the pics posted above of the same fish caught at different times of the year? It doesn't look like the same fish to me although it could be (you'd need clear photos of the same side of the fish to match spots). Trout don't have color "phases" although their colors can vary throughout the year.

It's a nice fish - looks like a stocked rainbow about 15" in length. While I tend to agree that you'll catch bigger and better trout in the future, if this fish has sentimental value than by all means consider a mount. Speaking as someone with some knowledge of taxidermy, the exactness with which the taxidermist can replicate the colors of the fish may vary. Shop around if you're concerned about subtleties in color. Many taxidermists pay their bills with deer heads and are pretty sloppy with fish. A good taxidermist specializing in fish mounts will charge around $20 per inch. They'll also appreciate clear photos. The winter pic is quite dark - if I were the taxidermist I'd certainly be more comfortable and confident working off the lower photo indicating brighter red coloration.
Good luck with your project!

My Taxidermist does very nice work on fish (Heritage can back me up) He charges like 11inch and 16 for a reproduction. Remember I am in Carbon county if you are interested.

The one above is a fish he caught last week in a stream that held the fish below. The bottom fish was a nice stockie that he caught in a stream local to him. The top fish is a nice stockie that he caught in the same stream. The bottom fish (if I remember correctly) was color enhanced by one of the PAFF users and used for his avatar. If need be, the same could be done to the top photo if he likes the coloration better. I agree that these are likely not the same fish, the coloration of the top fish looks like the ones that were stocked this Fall by PFBC. Now that I have recited the entire history of MR and his fish, please ask me what my wifes date of birth is . . . .

Pick which ever one you like better. It will make nice furniture either way.

I apologize in advance, but I could not hold back. This is the most ridiculous thread that I have seen on this site.

NF- You must not follow o to closely because we have had worse. Check out the Extranormal videos lol

Mike,

Take accurate measurements, and save the photos.

Fish for two years, and you probably won't want mounts of these fish any longer, as nice as they are. You'll catch plenty more like them. If you still want the mounts then, get them.

Keep fly fishing, and hit places like the J, which I think is near you. You'll turn up a handful of fish like this per year, and they will be wild.

whats your wifes birthday?

i agree with this.. if it is not 25+ then I would wait on the mount..

25+ wild fish i would be really thinking about getting the mount.

I agree with jayl. You can get a reproduction at any time in the future if you would like. You may catch a better fish later. I have several very nice photo's of my 14 inch "Wild Tiger Trout" I caught last year from a unstocked limestone stream. My wife double matted an 8x10 enlargement of the fish and then mounted it in a very nice frame. It looks wonderful. I still toy with the idea of a fiberglass reproduction. The nice thing is I can get it done anytime I want. IMO jayl has given you good advice.

Jayl has given you good advice. I had a repo. done last year of a brown trout from upstate NY. This was a once in a lifetime fish and after fishing up there for more than 20 years I knew this one was special so I went for it.Of course if I ever do catch one bigger, the circumstances of the catch might warrant another mount.

Get the photos printed and put them in a frame. Like Jay and others have said, these aren't the biggest fish you are ever going to catch, and if you fish the right places, you'll likely get many similar sized fish.

Sure it isn't this one? 😛

Ridiculous is only speaking up to point out how ridiculous we are. It's easy to sit back and wait for something to take a shot at. There is nothing ridiculous about discussion of topics that affect us. Get it out there and shine light on it.

Dang Matt. From almost two years ago. Gonna have to start watching what I write a little more closely. 🙂

Not quite sure what that means but I like it anyway.

Being a younger feller Mike, I'm sure you're as anxious to get this done as I was, but the other posters are right. There will come a day when you'll ask yourself why you did it.
If its an itch you just have to scratch, go for it and get us a picture.

For Squaretail, "Get it out there and shine light on it"=Say what you feel and think and be willing to discuss things you might have strong feelings about that others may feel completely opposite about i.e. Ballbatting Grest Blue Herons

Mike,

To heck will these boneheads if you wanna get the fish stuffed go for it dude. Yeah you might catch some bigger ones next year, but your ole lady might not let you fish next year . If it's gonna make you happy get it mounted, who cares what these hoofties think.
