I'm looking for an Amadou patch to dry my CDC and midge flies with. Every search seems to show them in England. Is there any place on this side of the Atlantic that sells them?
Thanks,
Bill

TCO Reading has them, just talked to my buddy there. Give them a call.

Feathercraft has 'em.

Honestly Bill, I've used all sorts of drying patches and materials, and prefer the "Wonder Patch". I know the guy that owns the company, and he sent me every product he sells to try out (free).

I'll bring you a patch that has a grommet to attach to your vest if you'd like, or you can just google it up. They're under 5 bucks, and that beats the tar out of the crazy price of an amadou patch.

These guys have 'em. I've dealt with them before, and their service is superb. Free shipping too.

Shane, thanks for the info.

Ed, I would like to give the Wonder Patch a try. Thanks for the offer.

If it work, it will save me some bucks to use for other fishing stuff. 🙂

Bill - It works at least as well as Amadou. I think it works better, and I've used mine for almost 10 years now. I got my samples before the company released them for sale, and all I had to do was post a review on a forum.

What I like best is that I use the inside to dry flies, and the outside to wipe off floatant from my fingers. The patch itself dries quickly, so there's always a dry spot to use.

Using the patch this way also has a side benefit - you can pull your fly line through the outside of the patch pinched around your fly line. It cleans and applies floatant to the line in one pass.

Another cool thing about the patch is that when it gets nasty, just throw it in the washer with your laundry. I have a plastic clip attached to mine, and just clip it to a zipper so it doesn't get eaten by the washer. It comes out like new, and I've done this dozens of times. It seemed to be more absorbent after I washed it the first time.

Another thing that works really well is the "sham wow" cloth. Or any of the ultra absorbant cloths, just cut a small 3" by 3" square. and keep on you. Basically what the wonder cloth is. I have a amadou patch and it works, but really no better than anything else. CDC flies seem to have a limited catching life before you must have to change to a new one. I have found even with trying with a cloth, powder etc. I usually get 2-3 fish out of them and then have to change to a new one. I take the old one, dry and let sit in the sun for a while and then 30-40 minutes it is ready to go again. If the fish still want that pattern it is.....

I did this experiment last night with a snowshoe fly.
I tried a super expensive Marc Petticoat amadou patch, a piece of Sham-Wow! (TM), and the tail of my shirt. Also, shirt and gink.

Amadou works surprisingly awesome. It'll dry the slimed thing right out and make it look basically fresh. On the other hand, its like $40. Who considers that a good value? Granted, I didn't pay for it at all, but whatever.

The shirt alone sucks period.

The shirt and GInk works admirably well, but then you can still only do this so much before it just won't Gink no more.

Then there's the Sham-Wow. Its German, and the Germans make good stuff, Vince told me that. Wringing it out in the Sham-Wow was probably 99% as good as the amadou, but at a fraction of the price (well, for me they were both free). Now, that was the blue Sham-Wow, and I know yellow makes objects faster, so I'm unsure if orange makes objects drier, but that's another experiment for another day.

I wouldn't buy one of those amadou patches, until I tried it out. Then I'd have paid $10 for one and thought it was a bargin, until I realized for even less I could rock out with a Sham-Wow.

The MP stuff is flat out stupid priced. Go ahead, ask me about the Wunderbobbin....

Please tell me about the wunderbobbin. I would like to here you say the exact opposite things that HA would.

Until someone buys it from me (with original packaging, barely used, best offer, no lowballers) I will only say good things:
1) The thread tensioner is pretty nifty.
2) It is quick to thread.
3) The thread tensioner is easy to use.
4) You can adjust the tension, quickly, after threading it, quickly.

Dear Ed, if you like it, I have one you can buy next time I see you. 😉

Pretty sure he has one already....now please go into detail about the magic tool.

The least used fly tying tool I own. 'nuff said.

Lol, I own one and it is useful when I get on a Cdc kick.

Amadou or Shamadou?

After reading gfen's scientific experiment and because I subscribe to the gfen school of cheap, I will give the Shamadou a try. I can always use it to wash the car if it does not work out. 🙂

I find it very usefull for cdc, mixing in hackle and synthetics is no problem. You can adjust the length of the barbs with it. I like mine. 🙂

Talk about cheap. Guys are complaining over 20 or 40 bucks. Same guys that by the cheap hooks and ***** when they keep losing fish.

Vince is cool. Who else could say "You're gonna love my nuts" on national tv and get away with it?

I've got the real Shamwow, and a dollar store immitation microfiber cloth, and they don't work as well as the Wonder Cloth patch - at least for drying flies. To each his own. A paper towel works better than all of them, but isn't as convenient or durable.

As for the MP TT bobbin, again, to each his own. I use mine almost exclusively, and really like it. Let me know what you want for it, gfen. I don't need it since I already have one, but I'd buy it to give to a friend that wants one. Bring it to the tying jam, and we'll get it into the hands of someone that'll appreciate it.

If I had your money, I'd burn my own.

Ed, DD: I'll bring it along, you guys fight it over it. You can pay what I paid, which is dealer. Anyone else pays me a profit. 😉
