Hey guys, newbie to the forum here. A buddy and I plan to fish Two Lick Creek in Indiana County this weekend. Has anyone fished it recently or this year ? Ive heard tons of stories about giant browns that used to reside there until a bunch of bait fisherman had come through and ripped the stomachs out of them because they couldnt fathom the loss of a 2cent hook. Any suggestions or information would be helpful. hoping to hear theres still some good fish around in that stream! Thanks

I used to fish Two Lick Lake quite a bit for bass, but over the past 10 years it seems like something messed up the bass population. I think they did something to the water as sometimes when it rains, the water will get this weird bluish color. Haven't fished there in quite some time though. Good luck, and report back on what you find. I would like to visit that area again some day.

I was born and raised in Indiana county and just came back from a trip there. I fished with my dad, above the wayne ave? exit off 119. I was amazed at the bugs. There were a respectable amount of hexes?, isos, caddis and smaller mayflies...maybe 18ish but i couldnt get a good look. Lots of decent structure and ,correct me if im wrong, a coldwater release from Twolick Res, but not alot of fish...at least no risers. We caught some fish on Prince nymphs and some buggers. Ill post some bug pics we took later...

Thanks for the reply fellas!

Pocketwater,
I fly over the two lick res. quite often being that my boss owns a few planes at jimmy stewart airport and always wondered how the fishing was in the lake.

J55tyger88,
Good to hear that you guys had at least landed some fish. I had planned on nymphing most of the day. From what ive been told that stream used to be outstanding brown trout waters. I am actually looking into volunteering for the Two Lick Anglers club and donating some money to assist in stocking, atleast im hoping they still stock with fingerling browns (couldnt find much info on it). Did the fish have any size? all browns? how many were landed/missed?

The first time I tried two lick creek, I stopped at the first bridge crossing below the dam. (Can't recall the route number right now)
Anyway, I spotted a few fish rising to cahills. And I went down to the stream and managed to catch a couple of nice browns in the 18" range.
That happened about 10-12 years ago now. And I've stopped at that same spot quite a few times since then. And haven't seen any rising fish since.
Which seems kinda odd to me. There are several nice pools there - above and below the bridge. And plenty of cool water flowing - even on a sweltering day.
I don't know what to make of the stream - in that section anyway

I live in Indiana, there's fish in there..

Pressure on these fish makes them light takers and spook very easily, some beautiful browns used to reside there.. A few still might, please preach C&R on that stream section as much as possible, especially while college is in... BTW the brown in my avatar is below the hoodlebug bridge

Just wanted to bump this one as a newbie to the forum. I've heard alot of good things in recent years about Two Lick and it's a very quick drive for me. But...I was never quite sure where to safely park and access the stream other than right off the Wayne Ave exit. I tried to access it from Old 119 behind Sheetz but didn't want to be on private property.

FYI Two Lick lake closed this year (2023) and for the foreseeable future. The lake was leased thru Penelec who did not renew the lease this year. Apparently it will become a new PA State Park or developed with houses.

I'm somewhat familiar with the Hoodlebug Trail although I've never actually walked or biked it. I do see 3 designated parking areas and the Trail seems to follow the stream so that might be the best bet. Although I'm not exactly sure of the bridges along it. Gonna have to do some exploring
The trail doesn't really follow the best portion of the creek, or follow any of it that closely at all. That is to say, it's not a source of convenient access.

Historically, unmitigated significant AMD impact starts right in that area. It's been several years since I last fished it, but the only access at that time was off old 119 and also just below the water plant on Waterworks Rd. I seem to recall the stretch from the dam to the waterworks being closed to fishing/recreation after 9/11.
Everything else is either far from the road or was posted.

Thank you for the info, I really appreciate it! Helps me determine if it's even worth trying or to spend time exploring Yellow Creek just a bit further up.

It's a tail water, with apparently, cold water right through the heat of summer
Between the stories of large fish I heard about, and the size of the couple I did catch there once, I would say it's worth exploring.
Especially since you live fairly close to it.

It takes me almost 2 hours to get there.
The main reason I haven't tried it more.

I seem to recall reading somewhere, that the AMD comes in around Homer city.
Which would, perhaps, make at least a small part of it accessible from the Doodlebug trail.

Thank you for your input. Sounds like I should give it a shot then. I actually scouted out the stream from Old 119 and found a few spots to pull off near a bridge by a fueling company. Not sure if it’s fisherman parking friendly but I didn’t see any posted signs. Hate to take a chance and risk it though. Only other place I could really see access was in downtown Homer City near Risinger Park. I did not realize it has cold water running through it, which makes it even more intriguing to me. And will save me from driving to State College for cold water in the summer

The more you try it, you're likely to meet other fishermen who may give you some scoop on it.
It's definitely a place that's piqued my interest for awhile now

I stopped there yesterday evening on my way back home from fishing another stream in the area.
The route 954 bridge spot where I first fished it years ago, is now posted.

Went upstream to the waterworks conservation area.
Water was so cold there, that a thick fog hung over it. Read 56 degrees.
Saw no bugs or rises, although it would have very hard to see them anyway.

Decided to explore downstream.
Got on Wayne rd/old route 119, and headed south towards Homer city
Stopped at the first bridge, which I believe is the same one Trout It mentioned earlier.

Some nice looking water there above and below the bridge, with a bit of a path down to the stream.
Only sign I saw said "No dumping - security cameras in use"
Would think fishing is OK - especially since it looks like others have been doing it.
Ran out of daylight, or I would have given it a try.

After I got home, I checked the Fish and boat trout maps.
Two Lick creek in that area is listed as having natural reproduction downstream to the confluence with Yellow Creek.
Which is where the pollution comes in I guess.

Think a return trip is in order......

Thank you for the feedback! Since we had all those weeks without rain, I have yet to return back there. I think I know where you saw the sign that said "no dumping-security cameras in use" close to some jersey type barriers at the pull off beside the bridge. That is the only place I could find to park other than possibly parking at the Auction Barn parking lot and walking across the road through the empty lot that's roped off with a stop sign. That would be a great open area to park, and close to the stream, if it wasn't all roped off. If you decide to check it out again, let me know and maybe we can meet up. I'm gonna give it a shot soon myself since work has slowed down and we've had rain.

That area has been posted for a long time. I recall it being posted at least 8 years ago IIRC, and that was only the first time I had personally been there, it was probably posted well before that time.
