Rod for Salmon/steelheads

I've caught steelhead in Erie with my 8ft 4wt but that was fishing in a little pool where the fish had no place to run.
NY is a different story, especially Ontario tribs.
With a beefier rod, you have more tactics available to go to.
One important one is that you can fish bigger and heavier flies on bigger water with bigger casts to bigger steelhead.
 
I can't even imagine somebody fishing the salmon river steelhead with anything lighter than a 6 wt. I recommend a 7 wt. for steel and 8 to 9 wt. for salmon. It's beyond me why anyone would use a 3 or 4 wt for steelhead.
