Theres been many posts on this board since I've joined about dries vs sub-surface. I'm with most opinions and just love to see the rise to my dry. On this particular trip, I would see none of that.

Paul G and I hooked up for a couple days of fishing the Centre co streams and we stayed at his trailer that many on this board have already seen. For its size, I would nickname it the Taj Majal of campers. Very nice and cozy.

The first day we went to Spring creek and as usual the dogs led the charge. The little one in front is Lucy and she and Paul became pretty good friends.

We both started with dries but they just werent rising and I took my first underneath with a San Juan.

After a half dozen more I took this very solid 17"er after one heck of a fight. After this fish my day could have ended and I certainly would have been happy.
However a little while later I saw a large wake and a wide white mouth open pretty far downstream from me. I cast my scud out with no weight and started feeding line....

We just couldnt seem to get a good shot of the fish before it started bugging me to get her free in healthy condition. The pictures just dont do it justice as usual and is in the top 3 fish of the year for me and I'm not a big rainbow fan. (except steelhead :-D ) It measured 24 3/4"es.

My very next fish. Is it wild or is it memorex?

Lucy checking out my very first Spring creek brookie. What a nice way to end a pretty big day for me.
Unbelievably Paul took the skunk this day. But the difference was blaring. He wouldnt get off the topwater and I took every single fish underneath, mostly on tan and olive scuds.

The next day we decided on Fishing creek and it was tough as ever. I was taking a solid skunk, not even a miss or even a look.
I noticed a trickle coming in and wished it was larger. About 40 ft later I noticed another trickle. I figured it may be a trib splitting before it entered the main branch and I climbed the bank and found out I was right.
Still tiny but just big enough to fish.

The little place was saving the fishing day for me and then I came to a very large hole and of course the very large 10 1/4" brookie that lived there....

..... :)

And again Paul endured the skunk. This day would probably attribute that more to the fickle Fishing creek than what we were using but Paul is no slouch with a fly rod. I believe this may have been the most blatant example of using what the fish want, and not what the angler wants.

And by the way, a few weeks back, me and Paul hooked up at the Breeches and he took 6 and I took....zero.
I guess it was just my turn.

now that is a post that will be mighty hard to top-well done, sir.

Another awesome report with beautiful pics from Squaretail. The timing works well with the recent thread re rainbows and brookies in Spring Cr. Obviously there are some nice ones there. The doggie photos are always fun too - tremendous enthusiasm. Fishing without a dog or dogs is a diminished experience. :)

Nice report and it looks like the two of you had an enjoyable trip. Thanks for sharing them, the pictures and report are both great!

Squaretail gets the slam on Spring. Beautiful fish!

Hey Squaretail,

Some drop dead gorgeous fish in those photos! Nice job on the pics and the report. I am jealous and wish I had been there too!!

That trib kind of looks familiar, could it be.........???

No, not the same. I did get a black widow swish-tail in the mouth of that 30+ incher since this trip, and I've also seen that large wild one again off a certain bridge on Fishing creek near camp that your Dad used to fish for natives.

Very nice Squaretail....those native fish are the nicest!
Thanks for posting.

Man the pix all look great!!! Wish I could have been there. Know you have a great time.

Sorry to hear about your dog, Im going through the samething right now. My 13 year old Lab is in bad shape, his back leg are about going and he just can't get around anymore. It's always a hard thing to do but you can't leave them suffer!
