Nymphing Leaders?

Depends. Tungsten putty is nice stuff, but it's hit or miss. Sometimes I get bad batches. If I'm going to do a lot of adjusting, I like to use it.

If I'm going to use the same amount of weight most of the day, I just go with shot.

Honestly, though, it usually depends on what I blindly grab out of my pack first.

Tung putty, by a long shot. Orvis tung to be exact. Loon has waaaayyyy too much variance and is subject too subject to heat/cold.

I use two nymphing leaders, and neither one has that problem.

1: 3-6ft mono furled leader -> a few feet of 2-3x to terminal tippet of 3-5x.

In this situation, when the 2-3x midsection gets too short, I just blood knot more 2 or 3x to it. Problem solved. For depth adjustment, shortening takes one blood knot and lengthening takes two. I'm out of commission for 2 minutes, max.

2: 2-3 ft amnesia -> 3-6ft 2-3x -> terminal.

Same situation. When the midsection gets too low, I just blood knot more to it.

For the furled leader, I put a few pieces of strike putty down the furled leader. I suspect this performs very similarly to jimmy's system, and it's my standard for shallow or calm water.

For the other leader, I either eurotrash nymph or put a thingamabobber on the amnesia.

The taper between 2-3x midsection and terminal is negligible.

You have a whipped loop and can change leaders. I have nail knotted left over butt to my line. It must function as dry and nymph butt. Figure a ring might just work there.

Or I could send the Sharkskin back to SA again and them I want yet another replacement. But the hip old cats say loops are for weenies, so I nail knotted it to prove I am a real man.

I tie my flies with a ton of lead and tungsten bead. When at all possible I try to aviod using shot. On PA's bunch of limestone streams and most freestone stream if your casting far enough upstream you shouldnt need much if any shot. The beads will do the work for ya.

I'm gonna get blasted for saying this. Watch the responses to follow.

" I cut my flies of and change shot placement everytime I switch runs."

This. I've been abusing the same little container for two+ years now, and I notice its getting worse and worse at holding, although that might be temp issues.

If its way cold, it'll crack off. Too warm, it'll fall off. Whatever.

I won't go back to shot, though, never ever. Not unless I'm pretending to be a competition fly angler and PA Dutch Nymph with a fly or two and a BB shot above it and just drag across the bottom.

Split shot is not allowed in competition! Keep up!

I thought you weren't allowed to use shot in competition? Wheres Aaron Jasper he would straighten us out.

The Letter Plank that helps him operate the Porn Distribution Unit in front of him is difficult to operate, be gentle. Sometimes he can't just point and click.

How in the world did you do that so fast?

The magic box that your friends call a computer does more than simply deliver p0rn, and Lady Gaga, to your video screen, my plucky young friend. It can also create and what we in the biz call "save" files, to be brought up at later dates.

Cut it back to 2-3 inches and put perfection loop in it. Problem solved.

Loops are not cool.

Didn't you read, he has invested life in THE ULTIMATE NYMPHING VIDEO and does not understand this. Trade him this for beer. You all win.

Am I no longer contributing anything of use to this thread? I feel I've gone outside the scope of "remotely helpful" at this stage. I think there's an OT thread calling my name.

Adieu.

(that means "goodbye," chimmy)

I hate your picture thing!

I use a similar nymph rig that Jimmy uses. I also am a big fan of the tippet ring. Those things are awesome. It saves the butt section and indicates when you need to add tippet.

I also like to use another nymph leader that incorporates a bi-color sighter for the butt section.

1 foot of 20 pound red amnesia blood knotted to 1 foot of 15 pound green amnesia > tippet ring > 3 to 4 feet of 4x or 5X tippet > double surgeons knot to 20" of 5x or 6x tippet. I use the tag end of the surgeons knot as a dropper.

I have no interest in learning how to fish from a fish counter.

You make Pookie go, and I'll make mine go. Bring back the kitten, man, it was you!

Chimmy or Jdaddy? Don't speak ill of the Czech Maestro.

Thank God, content so I can stay on topic!

How well does the green actually show up? The red's pretty good, but does the green conduct light like crazy fiberoptic action red? In the smaller diameters?
