I had to get help to identify this one.... Heptagenia culacantha. It's a solid #8. Too bad it's not a common bug.

from Susky on 5-30-14

Male, for what it's worth.

Wrong. The fly was sitting on my mother's back....see thick black hair in to of photo.

Very cool, Andy.

Here's a link to Troutnut with some info:

That bug is a dream bug for a fly tyer that loves to weave!

Interesting! I don't think I've ever seen one of those.

After a little reading, this thing is more rare than I thought. Sounds like only a few have ever seen one of these. Very neat colors on it.

How did it taste, Andy?

Cool bug, I find bugs on the Susquehanna to be quite common when you find then along the river. Did you see more of them?

Pincers and large eyes.

Chaz,

After speaking to an entomologist, it's a pretty rate find. He's only seen one of these. If I remember what he said, they live in fast water, hatch early so getting samples from the Susky that show these is difficult due to the higher flows early season.

found this stream report where there was actually a heavy hatch of these critters. I know we have a bug guru on here and I though they might find that interesting.
