Does anyone know how this works? I've found pics on the web but no instructions.

The pic below is the one I have. It's at least 25 yrs old. I guess Umpqua does not sell them anymore.

Hey Bob,

I've never seen one. My guess is you coil up the front 30' of fly line line and weigh it (by grains) and use a fly line weight chart to determine the line weight. HTH.

clip the first 30 feet of coiled fly line and read scale. look up common cents and get the scale there its the one I use to make custom heads.

Thanks guys. I'm not really interested in buying a line scale. I got this with a lot of other stuff from my uncle.

My uncle really liked fly boxes and dr slick clamps. Including the stuff I already had, I now have about 6 clamps and 20 fly boxes.

I'll test the scale later today with 30' of line and post the results.

Thanks Sandfly. I'll have to read that article again to fully understand how it works.

For anyone else who's interested here's a link to the 6 page article:

Simplified - The Common Cents System

At any rate, the fly line scale does work. I tested it with 30' of 4,6 and 7 wt lines and it's accurate.
