Have any of you guys tied the Vladi Worm? I am curious to see if it was productive as well.

I am thinking about tying some, they look pretty cool. I bet other colors would work too, like a neon green or a brown. The trouble is finding those colors in a contraceptive, would take some searching but its possible.

Matt,

There was thread the other week about it -- started by wetnet.
Lots of god opinions and recomendations about that fly.

I tie something similar but used scud back. I know it's not the same, but works okay. Besides, it's just a weight fly and isn't supposed to catch fish. *wink*

I searched and couldn't find it?

I couldn't bring myself to purchase pink condoms, so I used some balloons which I cut into strips, they look good but are not as thin to be able to see the shrimp foil. I did tie some in neon green with black thread for the ribbing, they look like a winner, even my wife commented how real they look. Now the real test, to see if they work!

I can't find Pink Condoms! Where can you get them? I did tie a vladi with a regular color (whatever color you call it) and it looks good....

I think I remember Loren saying something about only getting them from a Swedish manufacture......

Years ago, I bought a bunch from a gas station bathroom with hopes of staging an elaborate prank. They were pink.

Just an idea!

The "official" condom used to tie the Vladi Worm is a Crown condom. For those that are too embarassed to buy them, they are touted as the "condom of porn stars". Buying these actually ADDS points to your "man card", as opposed to buying Sally Hansens Hard As Nails. ;-) If you think you'd be the first one to buy condoms for fly tying, don't worry. A local condom store, "Condoms Galore" in Fullerton was able to point out the most popular colors bought by fly tiers!

Where to buy Crown condoms.

Here is Loren Williams' instructions on the Vladi Worm - it gives a lot more info on it, and the recipe is the original (as opposed to TPO's video).

I viewed the video at TPO, very interesting fly. Is that a Daiichi 1780 hook? What size hooks are you guys using?

This looks like a very interesting fly to tie. The question is, does it produce?

Just out of curiosity, about how many worms can you tie w/ one condom? I'm just about to cut mine up, trying to gauge how to divvy it up.

I'll pass on the condoms, seeing as I'm 14 and putting it on my birthday list, well, my parents might think something is up...

Six per condom. Here's the new link to Loren's tutorial:

Great tutorial, but imo Loren's redesign greatly affected the readability of his site.

Loren, if you're out there, go back to a solid background behind the text please! I love your site, but that is hard on the eyes in my opinion.

Thanks HA,

I thought I saw somewhere on there that there was suppose to be 6 per prophylactic. I just didn't see it upon my initial re-read.

Jay,

He also didn't transfer the articles he had on his old site. I really liked those. They were very well written and very informative. But you're right about the background, very hard to read. It should be easy to fix that, seems like a simple opacity change on the CSS should do it.

For what it's worth, two weekends ago when spring was blown out, I did very well with a vladi through the paradise section (no wading). You couldn't wade anyways. It was taking fish only a few inches from the bank. I admit, I am not a big fan of resorting to worm patterns, but I felt a little less conscious about my ideology after a dozen or so nice browns began chewing on it.

I suppose the idea behind the vladi is more about weight than anything else. I don't see how people get hung up on fishing worm patterns. Trout eat worms, trout eat mayflies, so whats the problem?

My buddies get the pink ones at the condom locker online. Vladi worms make great anchor flies, and yes they catch fish.

I fished them in a few hundred cfs over blown out on spring creek during the jam, and the week before it.

They didn't hook as many fish as large streamers, but when I saw a little seam next to the bank, the vladi usually got some kind of love.

And muskrat's right. The fish were on the banks, sometimes literally.
