With the heat wave this week I knew that the snakeheads and Bowfin would be putting the feed bag on. So I headed out to my local toothy critter spot . I first started throwing the old faithful snake charmer and I did get some solid hits but I couldn’t hook up . So I went to the old stand by and started catching right away .all said and done I bought three snakeheads to the boga which equals some good times .

They don't use beds, they pair up and lay their eggs on aquatic vegetation and both parents guard their eggs and eventually the fry for at least a month . I'm not sure on what the normal time frame is but when they guard their young the female will stay in the fry ball and the male will act as a sentry and patrol around the fry ball . Allot of times you can spot a fryball ball by seeing other fish leap out of the water trying to get away from the male attacking them because they got to close to the fry ball . A few years back when they found out that snakeheads have invaded a pond in Delaware was because a kid on a kayak was messing with a fryball and was attacked and bitten.

That's a very cool picture Jay. It really shows the pattern of the fish. What fly is that stuck in its mouth?

I can't get over the snakeheads you catch. Well done!! Sure they're invasive, but the smallmouths and brownies don't belong out there either. Would hate to see the snakes nudge out the 'fin, but that doesn't seem like the case? Such awesome fish though. Keep on doin' what you're doin'!!!

Congrats on your first jay348. Such a sweet catch.

I want one

Have had a really solid spring for bowfin on the western end of the state, and a little bit in Ohio.

Nice catches Bowfin are a seriously underrated gamefish .

Aye! I didn’t see this thread the other day when I caught my first snakehead on the fly- not a big one, but a snakehead nonetheless!

Nice catch Jacob. I've been meaning to make a snakeheas trip for the last 5 or 6 years. It still hasn't happened.
