I need help finding some information. I am trying to find information on the number of PA residents who fly fish, the number of people who travel to PA to fly fish and the economic impact of fly fishing on the state economy.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Contact th Pa Fish & Boat Commision. They should have records of Pa resident and out of state licenses. Trout stamps sold per license should give you a picture.

In addition to the PFBC information, Penn State has done some studies on the economic impact of angling on Spring Creek. They surveyed anglers and figured out their expenditures etc. So you'll want to dig out those studies.

I doubt that anyone really knows the number of flyfishers who fish in PA. But if you come up with even an estimate, let us know, I think it would be interesting.

Anybody care to guess? My guess is about 130,000.

TU has done some studies on the economics of trout fisheries. You could search their website. I know the economic benefits of trout fisheries has been part of their argument for protecting trout streams in the west.

What about the ones that use a fly rod with bait that say they are flyfishing? Don't think you will find out how many flyfishers there is. Trout stamp numbers will give you how many fish for trout for at least one day of the year. But it doesn't break it down to the different types of fishing. The closest way that I know would be through T.U. and FFF. Although you would have to consider some overlap with members belonging to both. Wish you luck.

TU wouldn't really be good for getting an idea for flyfishing, since the organization isn't a strictly flyfishing "club". Federation of Flyfishers might be better, but since there are only a few chapters in the state that might not be very indicative either.

Is there a trade organization for flyshops??? I would think that is exactly the kind of information a flyshop would want.

I think total license sales in 2007 was about 780,000 with about 590,000 trout stamps. My guess would be less than 5% or 30,000. Somewhere in the past I came across a national estimate. It surprised me how low the numbers were. I wish I could find it now but I seem to remember just a few hundred thousand nationwide.

I ran across a breakdown in the last year or so. It listed licenses sold by State for the entire U.S. and while it didn’t break out fly-fishing for each State, but it stated it in a percentage nation-wide. I recall the FF % of total angling to be around 10% nationwide. PA license sales in 2007 were 850,000, I added 2% to the 10% average since PA has more FF opportunities than many other States that have few coldwater fisheries, and thus less fly fishermen. Anyway, 12% of 850,00 is just over 100,000. I wish I could find that break-down, but I didn’t save it.

FYI PSU. I dug this info up. Maybe some of it may be useful for your paper:

This is the type of analysis the PFBC uses to predict revenues from license sales:

Thanks for the info, this is exactly the type of info I need.

Here are two very good studies. They are split into wild trout and stocked trout fisheries. But they give numbers for the # of fly fishers, lure fishers, and bait fishers. They give the average # of fish caught, # of outings, # of fish harvested for each group. Economic impact, etc. You gotta dig for the info you want, but its all there.

Wild Fisheries: http://www.fish.state.pa.us/images/fisheries/creel2004_wild.pdf

Stocked Fisheries:
