I went to Gander Mountain today, even their sale prices are overpriced, no wonder they are going out og business.

+1

I went yesterday. I thought maybe at 30-50% off you could get some good deals. I price checked 3 things on my phone with Amazon prime.

-3d shooter archery deer target, or some name like that. $68.00 at GM after 30% off. $74 on Amazon Prime. I could of saved $6 here but I don't really need a new target, just didn't want to pass up a good deal. I passed.

-a bow jack. It clips on your bottom limbs so you can stand your bow upright. Anyways it was $10.99 after 30% off. $10.72 on Amazon.

-the best. They had Bluetooth headphones set up as a isle display. I've wanted a pair for yard work for a while now. $30 after 30% off. I almost bought them but price checked and the same headphones were $19 on Amazon LOL. What a joke.

The fly tying section was emptied out. I could only imagine how great the deals were there. Like said, no wonder they're going out of business. Oh, and I never did see anything other than some winter stuff that was actually 50% off.

I ran into the same thing at a Sears that was closing down near me. I figured I could get a good deal or two.

Store was darn near empty by then, but I did price out a few things, and found even with the huge discounts, the prices on things I was interested in were as high and in some cases higher than elsewhere.

Yet, the place was packed.

Double the price, then knock 40 - 50% off? Amazing.

Gander Mountain sucks it isn't a wonder they are out of business.

I think that the announcement that they would all be closing all 126 stores was a little bit premature. Some might say intentionally misleading.

They apparently are using this to renegotiate some leases.

New owner did say they intend to keep at least 70 stores open, but I'm starting the over/under at 63 1/2. ;-)

It would certainly explain why the great deals aren't all that great.

They had one bidder buy the merchandise and one the stores. The merchandise purchaser is a closeout specialist and they are even selling some merchandise that GM didn't offer before. Once all the clearance sales are done a number of stores will close for good and others will be retrofitted, restaffed, and renamed.

You are right Lou, minimal discounts to be had.

The Williamsport store got rid of all their name brand shoes before they went on sale. One of the workers said they were shipped back to their distributor. The only deals I'm really seeing is on winter gear that is from past years. I bought a ultralight synthetic down Drake jacket for $45 that was originally $200. Otherwise most of the store is at the same price that other stores have comparable merchandise.

Is it a surprise that Amazon is cheaper? Why do you think they are going out of business?

At retail price level, no, it's not a surprise. At a "30%-50%" entire store clearance liquidation, yes it was a bit surprising Amazon was still cheaper.
