tying up some flies that call for a brown tail barred black. don't have any fly tying stuff for barring, does sharpie work?
 
You betcha. Some guys carry waterproof markers on stream to make last minute color changes to flies.


IMO, I don't think that minute of a detail matters anyways.
 
What kind of tail material?

I use sharpies all the time. You should be fine, but I've found some materials take the ink better than others.

I recently found out the hard way that some sharpie coloring (yellow in my case) turns bright red if superglue touches it...had no clue.

Experiment a bit and you'll find something you like.
 
some sort of synthetic fur my dad bought a couple years ago, not sure the brand but it works well. its for a floating shrimp pattern on the tail.
 
If you're barring hackles, do it before you pull the fibers off of the feather.
