In the last 2 weekends, I saw quite a few stoneflies while fishing, and it seems like a lot of people were doing well with small stonefly nymphs. I would like to tie a few to fish with for this weekend.

What are some easy stonefly nymph recipes that have been working for you all? Also, what sizes should I tie them in? I look forward to hearing from everyone; thanks.

black hares ear works, 14-18

A good generic small stonefly pattern is a copper john tied in black or brown with or without a bead. (see attached link). The pattern sinks well and keeps you down where the fish are. Replace materials with black wire, hackle, etc. You can use black dubbing or keep the peacock herl thorax for some sparkle. The flashback is also optional, try some with and some without, and let the fish decide. Good luck.

It's not easy to tie, but Kaufman's stonely nymph pattern is very nice looking IMO. And it's worked quite well for me on the few occasions I've resorted to dredge fishing.
It's even caught steelhead for me

the steelhead were hittin it yesterday
