Easily one of my "go to" flies, especially when the fish are flashing and taking emergers, the Soft Hackle Pheasant Tail is an easy pattern that I recommend. I'm curious to hear what other feathers you use on soft hackles, aside from Hungarian Partridge, thus please let me know.

Enjoy!

Hi Tim,

The other feather that makes sense is starling. In 14-20 it can imitate an emerging Blue Quill, Suphur, Hendrickson or BWO.

BTW, I like the synth dubbing ball just behind the hackle. As you said, that can easily be a different color to match the natural emerger.

For PT spiders I usually use either English Red Grouse or Woodcock.

Don't overlook the upper covert feather from a mallard wing, either. It's what I use on most of my PT soft hackles (and I tie a lot of them.)

I have used bobwhite quail wing/shoulder feathers for smaller soft hackles.

Ruffed Grouse, Woodcock, male & female Ringnecked Pheasant, Chuckar, and Bobwhite. Love soft hackles....love 'em.

Sylvester Nemes and Dave Hughes made me a believer.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions for other soft hackle feathers! There are some great ones listed, and it's great to see so many options for a style of pattern.
