I've always been curious how this was accomplished.

Eunan, is it a combination of different colored thread? Or is it colored after the fact with a varnish of some sort?

Three different colored theads. I tie the whole fly with white thread, then build up the head with white, with a thicker band in the middle. then the two colors go on around the white. 3 whip finishes, one for each thread.

Then varnished numerous times, usually three or 4 to get a nice shiny, smooth head.
