Me and a friend are heading up to state college tomorrow and are looking for a place in the area we can pitch two tents and maybe have a fire. Don't have any experience camping in the area or any possible sites. Any recommendations of areas would be appreciated. We will be fishing Spring Creek.

bellefonte koa, bald eagle state park will be your closest options.

Penn Roosevelt, Greenwood Furnace, and the two Poe state parks aren't too far away either. If you stay at one of the Poe parks you've got Penns very close too. ANYWHERE IN STATE FORESTS is also open to primitive camping for one night with no permit needed. If you're going to stay in the same place longer than a night you are supposed to get a permit. So, my advice, is go up Bear Meadows Road and park in the lot along Galbraith Gap Run. Walk into the forest and find a cool place to sleep. It is also free and you'll have more privacy and a more wilderness setting. Obviously there won't be any amenities though.

Just to clarify, you don't need a camping permit if you're backpacking and not staying at a spot for more than one night. If you're camping from your car, you do need a "motorized camping" permit. This link explains it pretty well. As far as campgrounds go, Penn Roosevelt or Bald Eagle would give you a pretty central location to check out several streams.
