Headed to the Salmon, no clue where to go.

So, I've bought a new rod. I've tied what feels like 50 different egg imitations. I got new tires for the ride and I'm taking the trek to Pulaski next week.

I have no idea where I'm going.

Could anyone share some insight on where to fish, best fly shop to visit and BS with, and possibly where to get a good bite to eat while putting a few cold ones back.
Any and all info is greatly appreciated.

step 1..... Google SR access map

It took 30 seconds to find this info..... which just happens to be twice as long as it will take for a jackwagon to cross your line or hook the back of your head. Enjoy

I went to Douglaston last year and I will be going again this year. You have to pay $60 a day for access but they only allow so many people in. They also have a list of guides on their website.

I'll second the DSR. pay to play. It's the best fishing for early run fish. The people that work there will give you some spots to fish, but if you can read the water for trout, you'll fish the same fishy looking spots. I think the new rate is $75 per day. Another bonus for the DSR is you don't have to worry about you car being broken into in their lot and that is worth something to me.

Looking for "hot spot" and you're low dollar like me...... Fat Nancy's shop for gear and right nextdoor is Ponderosa feed trough. Not sure of the street but if you stay left going through light at Dunkin, there's a little diner over there that I grubbed breakfast at a few times. Not bad either

Much appreciated and will be very helpful.

I'll be sure to wear my wool lid, although a 1/0 eagle claw with Paul Bunyan at the crank of his deep sea rig will cut through it like butter.

Gotta love the little diners, I think that will be the morning routine.
Here's hoping for some rain.

I'm definitely going to have to look into this option. We're staying just inside Pulaski, a couple blocks from the river itself so most likely will test the waters there first.

Fishing in Erie for years, this idea of private pay to play fishing right at the mouth of the river is so foreign to me. I can only imagine if walnut or elk was switched to this format. But from what you guys are saying, it's worth a shot.

I've never been to Erie but the SR is a fairly large river not a little creek that relies solely on rain to bring fish in. The DSR is above the mouth which is big enough for motor boats to come in.
There's plenty of "pay to play" controversy about it ...I have friends who swear against it but I don't have as much time on the river as they do (either total time over past years and days on the river going forward) so I have no problem spending my limited time there in the DSR,
Also I wouldnt suggest going to a diner for breakfast unless it's 3am. In the public water spots will be taken by 5am, the DSR is better but now they make people form a line.

Take your own food if at all possible. Unless things have changed since my last and final trip up there, there aren't many eating options.

There is no comparison between Elk/Walnut Creeks in Erie and the Salmon River. They are like trickles even when running full compared to the SR at normal flows.

The DSR is worth the additional expense.

Also - make sure you have about 50 pounds of split shot - large sizes. You'll need it. If you mean 50 TOTAL egg patterns that should get you through a couple days. If you mean you have numbers of 50 different patterns may be OK.

Go to Whitakers fly shop in Pulaski for advise, gear, etc.

I remember when it was 5.00 for a day. wouldn't spend 60 or 75 to play with fish now.

The Tailwater Lodge up in Altmar has a great resteraunt inside.

Great info guys I'm heading up in late November just the earliest my schedule allows will the crowds be any less then? Should I still fish the same places? I also have never been up there.

Thanks!

That kind of pay to play always piqued my interest, mostly because I can't decide how I feel about it.

I'm generally against pay to play.

But, one that's a per day cost that's reasonably affordable and open to fairly large numbers of the general public on a reasonably short distance of an incredibly crowded river. Well, to me, it's about the most stomachable situation for pay to play as I can think of.

Anyway, NY is every bit as close to me now as Erie is. But I still go to Erie when I head up because I know it. As with any new place, I'd think there's a learning curve, and I just don't have the time right now to take a learning curve on. I get but an occasional trip and I gotsta make it count. Heading up for a weekend this year. My last steelbow experience was a full 3 years ago.

If you are going in November you will miss the salmon but should have steelhead. The crowds will be less then if you went now or in October.

I'm fine with just the steelhead. Just wanted to give it a try since I've never been up there. Thats just the soonest I can make.

Price for a day pass at the DSR drops after Nov.1- $40 weekdays, $50 on the weekend. Lower fly stretch usually has good numbers of steelies at that time, but they get pounded on a daily basis. I would try to spend at least one day at Douglaston, best shot for some fresh chrome!

Plenty of fish outside the dsr. Plenty of people both places.

One other question for you all. I'm starting to tie up some flies for this trip what would you guys suggest for late November? Type and sizes? Thanks guys

Eggs of all colors in size 10 heavy wire.

Stoneflies, Hare's Ear and PT on size 8 or 10 Salmon hooks with a little bit of color added for attraction in the thorax.

That should keep you going. Switch flies often and keep on the bottom. Tie many. You will lose many.

Keep it simple and work water where nobody else goes. You will be surprised by the results. If you see a bunch of clowns in one area, keep walking.

If you fished Erie before. This is completely different. More of a challenge. Erie is like fishing a hatchery run.

Good luck. Get up early and fish hard.

what do folks do if the river blows out up there ? - are there any ponds to trout fish, or smaller creeks to fish.

can you fish the lake shore, would it be worth it ?

is it worth taking my float tube and fishing the beach near the river mouths (Not in the mouth, that would be silly...)
