Around the Fish and Boat Commission

The Fish and Boat Commission is looking into creating a pollution hotline that the public can call to report fish kills and other incidents.

The number — 1-855-FISH-KIL — is not yet in effect, but is expected to be by April 1, if not sooner. The number will be answered live during normal business hours Monday through Friday; it will go to voice mail that will be analyzed the next business day at other times, said Tom Kamerzel, director of the commission's bureau of law enforcement. In cases of dire emergencies during off hours, callers will directed to call 911, which can reach waterways conservation officers as needed, he added.

The commission had a hotline in the past, but "it became a free call to Harrisburg" to check on boat registrations, fish-stocking schedules and the like, Kamerzel added.

The plan is to test this new number for a year and monitor how often it gets used and its effectiveness, he said. It will cost the agency about $1,000 per year to maintain
