I’m inline, (16-18 month waiting period) for a new Richardson Chest Fly Box. In the meantime, I am considering the final design. I appreciate the comments and suggestions already made.

What is your experience wearing and fishing with a 3, 4 and 5 tray system? In terms of slips, trips and falls, does the 3,4,5 it obstructs your line of sight?

Dear Boulders,

I have a 4 tray Richardson knock off bought from Flyfisher's Paradise when they were still in Lemont.

It's a nice box, and pretty much undamaged. As far as wading goes, my beer gut obstructs my line of sight, even in a T-shirt. If you face plant with a metal fly box strapped to your chest expect anything from embarrassment, to bruised ribs or a punctured lung. They definitely are stout.

Wearing metal on your chest ain't for the weak-hearted.

Regards,

Tim Murphy :)

I like no more than three trays. They don't hurt your line of site. Lightning fast fly changes are the advantage. Two have dividers; the front one is just foam on the tray and lid. I have a fly floatant holder on mine that is ultra-convenient. I've fished off and on with Richardsons for 30 years.

Mine's a 3 tray, and it's generally "enough" for me. But no, I don't have any line of site/slip trip and fall issues, and I don't really imagine another tray or two would change that.

If it gets in the way of anything, it's actually like snagging line or flies. I might put the rod under my armpit to dig in a pocket for something or other, and the line goes between trays or something. Then you go to cast but you realize you're hooked up to your Richardson. You look and say oh yeah, and unhinge the line, but now the fly is dangling and you hook your boot. This is the oh so coordinated and graceful reality of me, lol.

That's a minor issue, overall though. I love my Richardson.
