Ranking Favorite Style and Fly for Trout

But sometimes.....it is the fly. Sometimes it's all about having the right fly.
As with nearly every question about what flies or fly pattern works best for an individual angler, the choices are all over the place. This confirms, the fly pattern really doesn't matter much most times, it's more about the technique / skill of the angler. Hence Mo's bumper sticker "It's not the fly.....you suck!" 🙂

It took 3 days and 28 replies for someone to finally list their favorite dry fly (well, at least 1 of your 2 favorite dry flies) as the Parachute Adams.

THE Parachute Adams (in size #16 I might add) is not only my favorite ❤️ dry fly, but it is overwhelmingly THE single BEST dry fly! (And statistically speaking, since only 1 of 28 listed it as their favorite that could be interrupted to imply that 96% of the fly fishermen here are fishing the WRONG fly. 😃

P.S. I’m not biased, just old and set in my ways…

P.P.S. I remember catching 100 wild trout on a Parachute Adams in 1/2 day of fishing, of catching 30 wild trout in 1 hour on a Parachute Adams, and catching 2 large trout on 2 successive casts on that fly. Well, maybe I’m just a little bit biased! 🤔

Maybe I’m dense - but I assumed the OP meant to rank your styles by preference and then give a favorite fly. Can’t imagine everyone here has the same exact preference of style order?

I didn't even read the OP. By looking at others responses, it seemed straightforward, but maybe we all got it wrong.

I'll play by my rules here 😉:

Ranking of preferred style:
1. Dry Fly - Parachute BWO (size 20)
2. Streamer - Half-Pint
3. Nymph - Micro CDC Bugger (i know but I fish it like a nymph)
4. Swing (gotta admit I have spent basically zero time swinging wets - it's on my list of things to learn. So I will give one that I like to let swing at the end of drifts either behind a dry or on a tag when nymphing) - Davey McPhail Caddis/Grannom Pupa

These are my preference rankings but I spend more time nymphing than anything else. Which is another thing I'd like to change.

You are right, and even though I didn't notice that, it still worked out to be correct. In fact I essentially only fish dries and nymphs. I do nymph more but prefer dries.
