There's an unusual angling story breaking in the Big Apple lately: the arrival of tuna close to to shore. Apparently, there's some thought that this may be a result of resurgent bunker populations.

We have discussed for years the need to restore bunker before Atlantic striped bass can bounce back. Anyway, there seems to be a lot of anecdotal evidence of increased bunker around NYC this summer/fall. Whether the tuna return like this next year remains to be seen. . . but I think this is an optimistic development.

Yuh better have a whole lotta backing if your're casting off the jetty at Breezy Point.

A mile offshore?! That's nuts. Makes me miss my boat. I don't however, miss the Breezy Point jetty. That place is so hairy. Climbing out it made wading seem easy.

Recently there was a photo of a tuna caught with the Statue of Liberty in the background. The tuna looked to be at least 100 pounds. Not sure if the photo was legitimate but it sure raised some eyebrows.

It could be a result of the Gulf Stream moving closer to shore? GG

they were around there in the 70's too. migration and bait.

Now that is something :-o
