Simplicity, I Love It

The river bassin' game.....I love the simplicity. No double nymph rigs, dropper tags, retying and adding tippet often, no tangles, etc. Just one leader, one fly. Working in 0 and 1x is much easier than 5x and 6x. The fish can be encouraged to eat how I want them to so much easier than how they demand it. Tonight once again found a clouser crayfish a tantalizing pattern to the smallmouth. No big fish, but the strikes were often and the fish were hard pulling.

I wanted a change so I put on a top water bug and also found success. The only 4 flies needed ever at any time of year are clouser minnows, clouser crayfish, woolly buggers, and gurglers. Simple, fast ties that are effective and easy to replace. Don't get me wrong, I love chasing trout, but river bassin' is where it all began with me and it is as fun as ever.

I’ve been thinking about getting into chasing bass on the fly. What type of rod do you use?

Basically whatever you want. I use an 8 or 6 weight. My go to is a glass 7/8 weight that is 7'6".

I agree. those 4 flies are all that's needed, in sharp contrast to trout fishing. I'll just add a Mr. Wiggly fly to that list. A brown wooly bugger killed them tuesday night.

Depends on the the size fly you're casting. I use an 8 wt because I have trouble casting a medium/large poppers on my 6. Some guys use a 7, but I dont own a 7wt, so it's an 8.

I work in even numbers in fly rods. I fish with 4's, 6's, and 8's. I have never ever owned any other weight rods. But I have quite a few of the above mentioned weights. I don't know how that worked out that way, I guess to limit the buying of reels and lines. I have never owned that ubiquitous 5 weight.

It's funny, i have a number of different "trout" wt rods, but only one "bass" wt.
Simplicity!! I should prolly do that with trout too.

Looks like a great time! I’ve been thinking about getting out myself since the water levels are getting good for wading. Are you finding fish between Harrisburg and Selingsgrove?
