The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (PFBC) are reminding anglers that a new federal law requires anglers who target or catch shad, striped bass, and river herring from the Delaware River below Trenton Falls or in the Delaware Estuary to register with the National Saltwater Angler Registry.

Anglers do not need to register if they meet one of the following exceptions:
• Are under the age of 16.
• Only fish on licensed charter, party, or guide boats.
• Hold a Highly Migratory Species Angling Permit.
• Fish commercially under a valid license.
• Possess a New York Marine Recreational License.
• Possess a Delaware Fisherman Information Network (F.I.N.) Number.

All anglers must still possess a valid state fishing license. Anglers may visit the Registry website at www.countmyfish.noaa.gov and click on the Angler Registry link or call the toll-free registration line at 1-888-MRIP-411 (1-888-674-7411). Anglers will be asked to provide their name, date of birth, address, and telephone number and will immediately receive a registration number. Anglers will receive a registration card by mail in approximately 30 days.

It is part of a national overhaul of the way NOAA collects and reports recreational fishing data. The goal of the initiative – known as the Marine Recreational Information Program, or MRIP – is to provide the most accurate information possible.

I fish both openers due to tradition. The split openers have allowed me to create a second tradition recently.

Opening Day is a Saturday. I will get out if I want to fish that day. Most opening days I do fish, particularly if rare old friends want to get out and I can join them. I would have no real reason to go to the SE as I can get to open trout water on special regs streams much quicker.

I live close enough to fish both. However, the first one is early, and I often fish around here or Centre Co. because some of the pressured has gone south.

We do the traditional, go to Camp, thing for the opener in the western half. Good weekend. I hit Kettle in the morning and deal with the crowds, then disappear to the Class As in the afternoon.

I live in the SE, and usually fish, (most of the time just watch) somewhere on the first day.

The other opening day, I usually go up to the camper(HemlockCG's). I like to go down to Penns in the open water and watch the circus, may fish in the afternoon!

I go to a camp up North for opening day, but this year I have to work. I ignore the opening day in SE PA, because of crowds and my dislike of the idea. That and the fact that all the streams I would be fishing are crowded even though they are wild trout streams. It's sad to see the carnage.

My tradition, is that I don't have one. I usually head out somewhere, but have never gone to the same place twice. This year I'm trying something new and probably doing some brookie busting in the morning and maybe hitting some stockies after the crouds die down.

I live too far away to make the SE opener. For the traditional opener I usually just fish a special regs section, but I may fish a secluded section of ATW this year.

Opening day to me is where all the non-fisher people come out with all their littering, rudeness, all fighting to catch trout too dumb to survive on their own. I'll head up to the mountains where I can fish a native stream without crowds, for fish that you have to work for, and those you catch and release right back to their home. That is the true sport of fly fishing.

I only fish the traditional opening day. I no longer fish it from shore. I go to my favorite stocked lake. We get there very early to get a parking spot, and launch the boat. The shoreline will be lined up with tons of people catching the little stockies, while those of us in boats are out working the deep water catching big holdover trout. Last year our average fish was around 17" while those from shore were getting 8-10 inch fish. :-D

It is good to see so many of you staying home on opening day (120 at the time of this post). The streams should be empty now.
Thanks guys!

Nick,

That reminds me of the quote. "that place is so crowded that nobody goes there anymore"

Do you fish Muddy on Opening Day?

You should stop at Woodbine or High Rock . Our TU is holding our annual food stand fundraiser.

I'll be fishing the Driftless Region in Wisconsin this year with ConMan. No PA opener for me this year.

I live in the SE, don't fish that one, but then travel to fish the traditional trout opener...

Dave, may I also give props to Heritage Angler? Ed did a lot of groundwork on the alternative location, and though we do not use it this time, his contribution to planning should not go unnoticed.
