I guarantee those underwater shots put stress on the fish. Probably just as much as hooking them. The one thing that's missing is that he didn't even bother to temp the water. Simply stating that he fished the cooler pools in the lower part of the stream is relative. Cool water under those weather conditions was probably in the low 70's. This whole string of posts makes me sick. I'm tired of self-centered, "look at my pictures" attitude that's prevalent with so many posters anymore. I'm done.

That was one of the most blatant disregard and disrespect of the resource I have ever seen. If you must record something for your site, there's plenty of good warm water fishing in your area.
This can be linked directly to stream reports on this site. And will sway my opinion against naming ANY small streams, regardless of location or access. Period.

imo, Hit the wild trout streams in the mountains if we get rain. The Yough is too warm even at the dam and will be for a while. Drive a couple hours to Yellow Creek or the Lil J or other central PA streams and you should be OK.
Oil is done for trout until October stocking. Now, bass... that's a whole other story... and probably one with a happier ending!

Cut me a break. I use lead-free shot and paid like 6 or 7 for a multi-pack. It's worth the extra few bucks just to "get the lead out" of our watertable.

Kev, Of course that's true. When someone says fishing the tricos hatch, they mean the spinner fall in the morning. That's when the fish go crazy... or at least hopefully they do. I just thought I mention the not-very-well-known-fact that the actual "hatch" happens in the evening and trout do eat the duns, too.

True with spinners but the duns can actually come off at dusk into the night and fish can lock on them. I've actually fished tiny Trico duns on Spring Creek a few times into dark.

Those other factors, according to my correspondence with USACE are pool level maintenance, weather occurrences and recreation usage (rafting and cold water angling). Unfortunately, imo, angling comes in last. I honestly don't understand why averaging slightly lower weekend releases for rafting can't be done to extend cold water release for 2 to 3 more weeks into September, when ambient nighttime temperatures will temper the average river temperature. Rafters will still have enough water. And trout fishing can be extended a few more weeks too. I am thoroughly convinced we ALL can have our cake and eat it too.

As one of the guys who fished the Yough regularly back in the mid 80's I can tell you the fishing is generally better NOW. Hatches are better. Catching adult trout is more consistent. And I've hooked more "pigs" in the past ten years than ever before. IMO, no comparison.
The only difference is that there are more fly fishermen now than ever before without a doubt. Not that it's crowded now, it rarely is. But back then you literally had the river to yourself after Memorial Day. My 2 cents... worth about a nickel these days. ![]()

I wonder too Tom, you would think the higher water temps had to have a role in this.

Try to fish for them early in the morning, evening or on a cloudy day.
Concentrate on the shady side of the stream. For me poppers work best in the morning and evening around dusk. Clousers and crayfish imitations are good searching patterns. Wear drab clothing. Avoid fast movements. Avoid false casting or keep it to a minimum. If you spook a bass remember its location and come back later on in the evening when the lack of light will be in your favor. I use a 8 to 9 feet leader for all my smallie fishing with a 5 or 8 lb tippet. In clear conditions, I might try smaller flies but generally, I size my flies to the stream being fished and the potential for larger bass. Good pop. of big bass, bigger flies 2 to 6. Other wise, 6 to 10. Also in murky water I'l upsize just to displace more water on the retrieve. A tip with poppers: Do not make a couple of casts with a popper in one prime looking spot. Make at least a dozen casts. I'm convinced you can make a bass strike out of aggravation. It just happened to me a couple weeks ago on the Yough. I saw a nice bass holding along rock in a slough. I cast 6 or 7 times and he didn't budge. I was almost ready to tie on a crayfish pattern to bounce past him. Thought I'd give it one more shot and WHAM, for whatever reason, without hesitation he came up and exploded on it. I honestly think he just got mad at it. (If fish are capable of getting mad.)

Last week I saw a nice muskie with a fish in its jaws while fishing the lower Yough. And once many years ago I saw either a muskie or pike take a small bird hopping around on some lily pads at Lake Arthur. I couldn't believe it when it happened...

dryflyguy,
I've gone to USACE a couple times about this for information. What they have told me is, basically, the lake "runs out" of cold water... it's gone. Throughout the year releases are scheduled against a complex formula of lake pool level maintenance, flood control, weather and, of course, rafting on weekends and holidays. I don't understand why they can't simply lower avg. releases slightly throughout the year to make the water last a few weeks later, but the response I got from USACE is 1) there's nothing simple about it and 2) this schedule has apparently been blessed by local sportsmen group(s). In other words, in their eyes, it's not a problem.

It's funny but I think the opposite. For me, fishing seemed much better on the J -- in terms of numbers -- 15 to 20 years ago than now. Maybe I've just been hitting it on bad days recently, but back then the number of fish was amazing for me -- I had 40+ fish days quite a few times. Now -- while maybe the average size is a bit larger -- the number of fish per outing has dropped drastically. (Maybe my skill rate has dropped too since I was able to fish much more often back then.) Either way, its still a nice river to fish and you can always depend on at least a few cooperative trout.

I once met a guy fishing the slow water above the Allenberry Dam sticking one fish after another while those around went fishless. He was using a size 26 dry that was nothing more than tiny hackle wrapped around the hook. To each their own.

I'm late in responding to this post because it just hit yesterday who the greatest fly fisherman I've ever seen is.
He was a guy I only had the pleasure of fishing with a few times. He couldn't cast far. He sometimes needed help wading and/or getting on the bank. He didn't know hatches that well. But he was passionate about fishing... and the outdoors in general. And he could catch fish better than most fisherman, including me. His name was Terry Yockum -- aka The Cripp -- and I believe he posted on PAFF. But he was a regular on FFP site. The first time I met Terry was on Spring Creek. I arranged the meeting via the computer. I was astonished at his total disregard for his physical challenges. Once I helped him into position on the edge of a deep run, he tied on one of his favorite patterns, the Green Weenie and was soon into some nice fish. About an hour later he had out caught me 5 to 1. I fished a couple times after that with Terry. He talked openly about his life and the challenges he had faced. And any "disability" he may have had disappeared when I truly got to know him. He was simply, Terry. A passionate fisherman from Central PA. I had heard Terry was in the hospital a couple years ago and wrote him a letter to see how he was doing. I was shocked when his wife left a voicemail saying he was no longer with us. Greatness can be measured in so many ways. But for Terry it was simply living life fully -- following passion and inspiring others -- despite the hand you were dealt with. His goodbyes were always, "Stay strong, Paul." Words I try to live by today, no matter what challenges I face. Thanks, Terry.

Ha! It's all an angling myth anyway. A few straggling browns at the mouth of a crick is far from a fall "run" of monster piscivorous fish that one imagines. I've been chasing this mysterious migration for decades across various parts of the state. I've come to the conclusion that -- outside of the great lakes tribs -- it doesn't really exist in any tangible sense.

Fished the river on Saturday from 5 to 8 pm on a certain stretch between Dawson and Smithton. Weather was warm, humid and overcast -- perfect for smallmouth fishing. Water temped at 77 F. Caught about 12 fish ranging from 4 to 14 inches. All on top with chartrusse and white poppers. Most of the better fish were not caught in the main current but rather in splits near islands and grass beds. I would fish sections of the main river without a pass, then hit a certain stretch between islands for example and do well. Water clarity was very good. The best I've seen on the days I've been able to get out this year. Saw a ton of small bass... a good sign of things to come I hope. And the highlight of the trip... a muskie of about 40 inches with a fish -- looked like a sucker -- sideways in its muzzle. It swam about 8 feet from me. Startled the crap out of me. Very cool.

"Give-a-Show-Joe" is at it again. Great guy. Wonderful teacher.
True story -- When I took his class back in 1979, we were at the Paradise on Spring Creek on a field trip. Joe had everyone gathered around talking about the advantages of tying a streamer with a loop knot. He would simply flip out the fly and play with it so we could all see the life-like action of the fly. The only problem was, his speech was constantly interrupted... by trout at the end of the line. After 3 fish in a short period of time, he finally had to reel in to finish talking. Lesson learned the best way possible.

I'll take your word on it Kev, I haven't tied a fly in 20 years. No time.
Once the girls are grown I'll have to start up again. But I do agree that the video showed a much more complex pattern than what's probably needed. I have used a Zug Bug many times during slate drake season with great effectiveness. I also do buy iso nymphs from Steve at FFP in State College. They appear to be simply tied. Very durable. And they work beautifully.
