It takes several years to really understand and start having some success with fly fishing. For me I think it was at about my 5th year and about 10,000 casts that remember it all started to work.

Reading all the books I could I started to understand the hatches, trout feeding habits, water conditions, started to speak Latin in the shower and then after time I started catching some fish with that knowledge on my own.

The reading helped, but the real knowledge came from time in the water. I couldn't have done it much sooner even if the Internet was around back in the olden days. 1980 or 2010 you still need a lot of boot time to have it click.

Those first five years were great. Learning as a journey is it's own reward and then when you think you finally get have it figured out your realize you will never know it all.

The Internet is not leaving any time soon. I don't think PAFF provides all the short lines to success, it just makes standing in line a lot more fun.

Guys,

I will be there to take photographs. Please do not feel obligated to share with me. I truly enjoy and admire all your wonderful flies, especially since I really can't tie. Enjoy the time without having to go overboard.

Looking forward to catching up with everyone.

Dave

Was up on a college tour of Penn State with my daughter. Made it over to Spring Creek for a couple of hours with my son afterwards.

Conditions were awesome when we went out from 2-4. A cold front had just blown thru the night before. This afternoon was sunny and 60 degrees. Water was at normal color and height with temps about 56 degrees.

Sporadic caddis were coming off in the afternoon and a few small BWO mayflies. Worked on a couple of rises, but no luck with dries. Nymph fished the rest of the time and several strikes with a Walt's Worm.

Really a gorgeous day. My son was a little bored as not catching much so he took some pictures.

I left a PAFF Euro Sticker on the sign for the next angler in the lower parker lot next to the handicap spot.

My daughter is looking at Penn State for college and we are heading up there tonight.

Gonna be trying Spring Creek Saturday afternoon with my son while the girls go do whatever it is they do. I think we may get dropped kicked downstream from the Paradise near the handicap spot.

Looks the front has passed and we should have nice weather over the weekend.

Like Jack, only on a few occasions have I ever felt I needed one. Last year it came to mind on more than one occasion. The type of water you regularly frequent plays a big role of course. I put it on my list of things to get for this year, just have not gotten there yet.

If you are just getting started probably not a priority.

I was very proud of the fact he was had a pretty good roll cast going right away. It was his first time stream fishing too. The whole afternoon was a lot of fun.

My buddy Ron just stocked me up with the bugger and a few other patterns. He was one of the guys that taught me as I got started. Glad that we had one his buggers on when the fish was caught.

Made it out to East Branch Antietam Creek in Waynesboro on Saturday. Great way to close out Winter. Very nice day. Sunny with air temps at 70 and the water temp at about 50 degrees. Water was clear, high and moving quickly from the recent winter snow melt. We got out from 11:30 to about 3:00.

A special day as it was the first time my son went out fly-fishing. We spent a lot of time learning how to roll cast. The time we did fish we tried nymphs, San Juan Worms, the dreaded green weenie and finally had a little luck with a woolly bugger.

No fish rising. We saw only a couple of stone flies and one other angler as we were leaving. We parked on the top end of the project off Welty Rd.

Sometimes the term skating is used as well. In addition to skating a caddis I often will do the same with mayflies, but really like to skate a spinner. Seems to take the action of egg laying.

K-bob,

Some variations to this but this is a good visual of how and why a roll cast works well for weighted nymphs and streamers.
