I hooked a 12-14" brown under that big slanted rock at the base of the falls, fought it for a while, and got it up to the surface. Then I realized that there was no way I could get him up to the top of the falls where I was standing (at least 5 or 6 feet above the pool) and no way to get down to the fish. No choice but to give it slack and just let that one get away.

No way of knowing for sure, but my brother landed a similar size fish from there in late June of this year. I hooked what I'm pretty sure was the same fish two weeks earlier than he did but lost the fish at my feet.

I would bet it was probably the same fish. An adult trout could live almost its whole life in a spot like that without ever having to move more than a few feet except to spawn.

I am pretty sure I know the location of this hole. You can PM to verify, if you so desire. Anyway, if it is indeed the hole I think it is, I lost a very nice trout there last year. I caught a few browns in the 6-8" range that day, and then I had something much bigger latch onto a green weenie. It bent my 7' 4wt into a U shape and proceeded to break me off after a few seconds. I did not get a real good look at the fish but I estimated it to be in the 15-16" range.
