Fished the Catch and Release FFO Area
Air Temps in the 40's

Didn't take stream temp - but it felt warmer than the air.

We saw a few Grannom Caddis hatch in the morning - not enough to cause much surface action. However, a green weenie, produced several trout subsurface. This chartreuse fly is not a horrible imitation of the bright green grannom pupae, but a more specific imitation might have picked up more fish.

Around 4:00 PM we encountered a tremendous Baetis hatch. The fish were taking emergers like mad in the riffles next to a deep pool we were fishing - they were rising all around us in water about 18" deep. The hatch was very prolonged.

After the emergence the fish settled into deeper water and rose to Duns as they floated downstream. The Duns remained on the surface forever - I guess due to the cold air temps.

I'd like to say we caught a load of fish - but ... as it always seems we couldn't match the hatch very well.

The bugs were a size 20 I'd say - with a pale olive gray abdomen (on the bottom) , the top of the abdomen was a darker green. The wings were a dark gray.

Our size 18 olive comparaduns were refused unconditionally. I think they were too green, too big and too heavily tied. A size 20 very slim-bodied, light gray-olive, fly with dark gray wings may have been the answer for the duns.

We managed to pick up maybe 10 fish on assorted patterns - but nothing produced consistently.
