Stopped on the way home from work yesterday afternoon and fished the FFO C&R section of the Octararo Creek. I only fished for a couple hours but mainly wanted to get down into the special regulations stretch to see how some of last years rain events had changed the creek. This is one of my favorite stretches of stream with some spectacular scenery. It almost makes me feel like I am not in Lancaster County. I really enjoy the geology of this area. This stream is mainly where I learned the ropes of flyfishing when I was a teenager.

It was a bluebird day with temps reaching 70 degrees. The water temperature was 56 degrees with a very good flow. I started out nymphing with a tandem rig but quickly noticed a lot of insect activity with tan caddis, craneflies and midges coming off. The surface activity was minimal but I noticed a few rises occasionally. I switched to a size 16 CDC & Elk with a LaFontaine sparkle pupa dropped off of the bend. After seeing a fairly consistent riser down in the run below me I circled down around below and got into position to fish it upstream. A nice 12" stocked brownie came up and confidently took the CDC & Elk. My first trout on a dry in 2014! The hatch activity slowed so I switched to a dumbell eye white wooly bugger mainly as a locator fly to try to find out what areas were holding fish. I figured I could catch a few on the bugger but also locate fish as they often can't resist slashing at or chasing a bright bugger. I managed to catch another brown and two rainbows and located many other fish. Kudos to the folks who expended the time and energy to float stock this section of stream. They put some very nice fish in and really covered some turf. All in all it was a very enjoyable few hours spent on a section of stream that has always held a special place in my heart. Here are a few pics.

Is that last photo as you're getting down to the edge of the woods, right before the trail goes up to the road? Or is it up towards Black Rock? Been a number of years since I fished Octorara but I have a number of fond memories of pulling some fish out of that hole, regardless of which one it is. And its the stream where I caught my first fish on a fly rod.

salmonoid,
Yep, you got it. That run always seemed like it was good for a fish or two. I didn't catch any there on Monday but I had one chase my bugger - just didn't want it for real. The hole upstream from there with the big rock is kind of choked up with a lot of brush from high water right between the rocks and is more challenging to fish than usual.

I do t know much about this stream but the scenery you show here looks beautiful. Perhaps I'll make the drive to check it out!

This was the first stream I fly fished on when I was a student at Millersville. Those pictures bring back great memories.
