Hey everyone, long time reader, first time poster. Had an awesome afternoon/evening on Valley Creek. Weather cleared up nicely and nothing but sun after around 3PM. Water temp unknown but I assume mid-forties. Hit the water mostly upstream from the covered bridge. Nymphed for the first our or so unsuccessfully with both small BHHEs and caddis emergers. Noticed some flies coming off at around 4/4:30. Mostly midges, some small caddis, and a few larger sulphur-like species. Nothing else that I noticed, with the exception of ample caddis larvae under the rocks. Saw some sporadic rises and as I was having no success below the surface, thought I'd bust out the dries. Tied on a size 16 sulphur dun at the end of some 6X and landed a few fish ranging from 5-9 inches. As the evening wore on the rises became more and more regular. I headed to another favorite stretch and the fish were rising everywhere. They must have been taking midges as it was all I saw coming off. A couple splashy rises made me think caddis but no takes on my elk hair forced me to tie on a small BWO pattern as I have no midges in my fly collection (oops). Landed a couple more that way before calling it a night. Awesome getting regular action on Valley for the first time. My new years resolution is to approach with stealth (I casted on one knee for most of the night) and it really paid off. The fish in Valley are the prettiest I am familiar with, it'd be interesting to know why. Also a bunch of enormous suckers. I'll post pics if anyone is interested just not sure how.

Beautiful trout! I love catchin' small fish like that...... I just downsize to a 3wt or below.
I'm also seeing lots of bugs, but not many risers yet.

Good report Wes. Haven't fished Valley since '82 when I lived in that area. Beautiful trout. I'm going to have to make time when I visit friends in Philly this summer. M

My new 7'6" four weight is perfect on that stream. Tight casting is crucial. The fish third from the top was remarkably light colored. Just golden throughout. Fish in there fight like hell too! What a resource to have 35 minutes from Philly. Makes a nice respite from law school. Happy St. Pat's all!
